Palestinians hold a symbolic key during a Nakba rally in Gaza City May 15, 2010. Palestinians mark ''Nakba'' (Catastrophe) on May 15 to commemorate the time when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled or fled from their homes in the war that led to the founding of Israel in 1948.

GAZA (Reuters) - Leaders of rival Palestinian factions displayed rare unity on Saturday as they marked their "day of catastrophe" or nakba at a rally in Gaza, raising hopes of reconciliation between the two bitter rival parties.
World
It was the first time leaders from Islamist Hamas and the more secular Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had shared the platform at a large public gathering since Hamas seized the Gaza Strip from Fatah in a 2007 civil war.
Palestinians mark "nakba day" on May 15, the day in 1948 when Israel declared statehood after which some 700,000 Arabs fled or were expelled in the war that ensued.
The rally, which was organized by the much smaller Islamic Jihad group to commemorate the nakba's 62nd anniversary, coincided with reports of serious talks between Hamas and Fatah to find ways to resolve their differences.
Top Palestinian businessman Munib al-Masri who has been heavily involved in recent mediation efforts, expressed cautious optimism, telling Reuters that "the coming days may result in a positive outcome but we should not expect too much."
Masri has been mediating between the two groups' leaders in the Palestinian territories and in exile and has enlisted the support of Arab diplomats to help narrow the differences. Over two years of Egyptian mediation efforts have so far failed.
Masri's efforts have led to a phone discussion between senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar and Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmed that has been well publicized among Palestinians.
Zahar told Reuters that if discussions with Fatah were successful the two sides would bring a joint proposal to Egyptian officials who are leading talks, saying that "reconciliation has become an urgent necessity."
Fatah official Zakaria al-Agha said the unity shown at the rally was "the start of a process to achieve reconciliation."
Hamas, which calls for the Jewish state's destruction and refuses to recognize agreements Fatah signed with Israel, has been locked in a power struggle with formerly dominant Fatah faction since it won a 2006 Palestinian election.
Iranian-backed Hamas scorns Abbas for his recognition of Israel and his declared readiness to renounce armed struggle.
Palestinian residents in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank have said the enmity between Hamas and Fatah following the 2007 Gaza standoff has wrecked the social fabric of Palestinian society and has undermined peacemaking with Israel.
The two groups continue to carry out arrests of activists affiliated with their rivals in Gaza where Hamas rules, and in the West Bank where Fatah holds sway.
Gaza has been blockaded by Israel and Egypt for three years and Hamas is blacklisted in the West as a terrorist group and has no normal access to funds as a recognized government.

It matters not what is agreed to in the future unless a Palestinian child has the same rights , opportunities and choice where he/she chooses to live as a Palestinian Jewish child.
A state built on stolen land and military strength can not stand the test of time.

the land of Israel was not built on stolen land. This along with other lies have been used to keep the Palastinians trapped in acycle of hate that can never bring peace.

TO QUOTE: “It matters not what is agreed to in the future unless a Palestinian child has the same rights , opportunities and choice where he/she chooses to live as a Palestinian Jewish child.
A state built on stolen land and military strength can not stand the test of time.” Your point is well taken fron your personal perspective but won’t promote peace. If the Palestianian political platform is based upon the eventual dismanteling of Israel then on what basis are you “negotiating” and why should Israel bother to “negotiate” at all? My friend; I well understand the buzz words you are using are nothing more then verbal cover for the objective of “liberating Palestine from the Israeli’s. As you well know the recovery of land claimed by Palestinians in what is now greater Israel will never happen. SO Palestinian children will never live wherever they care to. Stop the game play and come up with a position that can fullfill most of your aspirations without needing to destroy the other side.

Presently in Israel there is a trial for the wrongful death of a young American activist at the hands of the the Israeli army in Gaza in 2003.
Israel claimed the death of RACHEL CORRIE was an “accident”and IDF investigation quickly reached it’s non liability conclusion.
This has been standard fare of the Jewish state’s investigations.A NON Jewish life does not rate as much as a Jewish life.
THE ESSENCE OF A RELIGIOUS STATE.
Now the Palestinians had the the unfortunate happenstance of living in what the Zionist enterprise wanted for a home for world Jewry to be “safe” after WWII Holocaust.
The dispossesion of non Jews from Palestine under the guise of war suceeded in evicting a large number of Palestinians from their ancessteroal homes in 1948,1956,and 1967.Those refugees were never allowed to return.Their villages plowed under,Jewish towns would replace them.
In between Israel policy would systematically Demolish Palestinian homes.Presently East Jerusalem Palestinian homes are to be destroyed.
Sadly Rachel Corrie was attempting to stop such a home demolition in Gaza when she was runover by an American built IDF armoured Caterpillar D-6 bulldozer.According to western witnesses, after Corries was runover, the IDF Operator reveresed his vehicle and ran over Corrie a second time with the vehicle’s blade down.Israelhad attempted to keep witnesses from testifying, but under US pressure relented. The Palestinian doctor in Gaza who performed the autopsy was barred from the trial.Gaza is presently under a crippling siege by Israeli forces and only the bare essential to sustain human existance is allowed.Israel also conducts regular attacks on the 1.1 million Palestinians imprisoned in the poverty stricken enclave.

I’m certainly aware that there is a narrowly held view that a Palestinian Muslim child is not as worthy as a Palestinian Jewish child but history has shown that these views are considered by decent and normal people to vile and not sustainable.

Certain land issues aren’t even subject to debate in the region. There has been encroachment beyond the set borders; that is indisputable. Furthermore, the buying on Orthodox land is no big secret either and the annuals paid to Israel, by America alone, are not earmarked for any particular use or purpose. If you are going to comment, at least be truthful, or save it for a less reputable forum. RIP Rachel Corrie as well; tragic story, but only one of millions of tragic stories to be sure. I would like to see America out of the region lock, stock, and barrel; its involvement has mostly been rewarded with enmity and the regret monies over the decades had been used on stabilization and humanitarian efforts as opposed to weapons and death on both sides.
