Layton, UT, United States (AHN) - A slain boy's mother and stepfather were expected to be charged in his death Friday by prosecutors in northern Utah.
Nathan Sloop, 31, is facing charges of murder and child abuse in the death of Ethan Stacy, 4, while Stephanie Sloop, 27, is suspected of abuse, obstruction of justice and desecration of a corpse. The two are being held in the Davis County Jail.
The couple was arrested after confessing on Tuesday. Police found the body of Ethan wrapped in plastic bags and buried in a remote area the same day.
Ethan arrived in his mother's house in Layton on May 1 to stay for the summer. He was reported missing by Stephanie shortly before midnight on Monday.
Investigators said interviews with the couple revealed the 4-year-old boy was severely and repeatedly beaten. Photos of Ethan found on his mother's cell phone "showed a progression of injuries to the child on the head and facial area," a police affidavit said.
One photo with a date stamp of May 4 showed Ethan with a swollen face and jaw. The boy's stepfather told police the swelling was because of a peanut allergy, but authorities later found the injuries to be because Nathan had "engag[ed] in a systematic and progressively more violent pattern of abuse toward Ethan," according to the affidavit.
The mother told police that Ethan was beaten on May 5 by Sloop, who was her fiancé.
Ethan was left alone in the house the next day, locked in his bedroom, while his mother and Nathan went to get married. The couple told police they were afraid to bring the child with them because someone might report the bruises and swelling on his face.
The boy's condition worsened over the next few days, according to affidavits. He vomited, suffered from fever and lethargy, and refused to eat. He was given Motrin to address the swelling. His stepfather allegedly gave him Benadryl to keep him quiet. Police said the mother found the child's feet and the backs of his legs running up to his buttocks badly burned on May 7.
Ethan was found dead in his bed on May 9. The stepdad and a friend buried the boy in a rural area near Powder Mountain, according to reports
