Russell Crowe snaps over "Irish" Robin Hood accent
LONDON - Actor Russell Crowe stormed out of a BBC radio interview after suggestions that he had made the quintessentially British legend Robin Hood sound Irish in his latest movie. New Zealand-born Crowe, who was raised in Australia, has been the target of criticism in the British media for his accent in the "Robin Hood" action adventure movie which opened this week with its world premiere held at the Cannes film festival.
NBC cancels long-running crime show "Law & Order"
LOS ANGELES - The verdict is in. TV network NBC announced on Friday it is canceling crime drama "Law & Order" after 20 seasons. With its revolving regular cast and its guest celebrities, New York-based "Law & Order" drew its inspiration from real crimes and events, giving it a "ripped from the headlines" appeal.
Oliver back on Wall Street with bank crisis drama
CANNES, France - Rumors, insider deals and rampant speculation drive markets down and companies to bankruptcy in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps", which weaves fiction with the fact of the global financial crisis. Oliver Stone returns to the scene of his 1987 hit "Wall Street", and Michael Douglas is back as ruthless corporate raider Gordon Gekko in a film where big banks have replaced the greedy individual as the bad guys.
Michael Jackson's children become Web stars after leaks
LOS ANGELES - The once sheltered children of the late Michael Jackson have become Internet sensations after home-made videos of two of his three children playing up for web cameras were leaked and appeared on YouTube. Jackson, who died aged 50 last June of an overdose of powerful medications, went to great lengths to keep Prince Michael, 13, Paris, 12, and Prince Michael II, 8, out of the public eye, even making them cover their faces when out.
Italian satirist takes aim at Berlusconi at Cannes
CANNES, France - Comedian Sabina Guzzanti mounts a Michael Moore-style attack on the Italian political system in a documentary at the Cannes film festival that paints an alarming picture of eroding democracy and official lies. "Draquila: Italy Trembles" examines the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated the medieval city of L'Aquila last year, prompting a vast government clean up and resettlement operation driven by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Tokio Hotel guitarist falls ill after taking Viagra
BERLIN - Tokio Hotel guitarist Tom Kaulitz told a German newspaper on Friday he fell ill after taking too many Viagra tablets and could not see straight for days. Kaulitz, 20, told Bild newspaper that someone offered him a Viagra tablet during a concert tour of Asia. After first turning down the offer, Kaulitz said he decided to try one. He said a little later he took a second one and fell ill.
"Iron Man 2" set to outpace "Robin Hood"
LOS ANGELES - Russell Crowe rides into movie theaters on Friday with "Robin Hood," but "Iron Man 2" should score a second weekend as the top film in North America. Marvel/Paramount's "Iron 2" will likely ring up $50 million-plus, while tracking surveys have Universal's "Robin Hood" bowing in the $40 million-$45 million range.
"Twilight" co-stars begin tough contract talks
LOS ANGELES - The "Twilight" actors who play the vampire Cullen kids have rejected Summit Entertainment's offer to return for a fourth and fifth movie, thus holding up the studio's plan to send teenage girls into fits of euphoria by announcing that "Breaking Dawn" will be split into two installments. Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene are each asking for about $4 million both movies, sources close to the dealmaking said. The negotiations are just kicking into high gear, so the numbers could change.
"Bruno" lawsuit adds Jonah Hill, Jay Roach
LOS ANGELES - The Palestinian activist who sued Sacha Baron Cohen, David Letterman and NBC Universal for defamation in December for being portrayed as a terrorist in "Bruno" has refiled his $110 million lawsuit with a few more bold-faced names as defendants. Actor Jonah Hill and director Jay Roach -- both co-producers on the Universal-distributed comedy -- have been added to the complaint, filed in Washington DC superior court by Ayman Abu Aita. The self-described community organizer claims he was duped by the "Bruno" gang into being interviewed on camera, and later found himself identified in the film as a "terrorist group leader."
Early Cannes films are polar opposites
LOS ANGELES - The Cannes Film Festival launched its competition Thursday with two diametrically opposed films, one as authentic as the other was inauthentic. The authentic one belongs to Chinese director Wang Xiaoshuai. Besides being a finely wrought drama about a grieving father struggling to comprehend the events and reasons leading up to a tragedy involving his son, "Chongqing Blues" portrays the port city of Chongqing as a place undergoing an urban upheaval that leaves its youth to become expert slackers and perhaps frays familial bonds.
