Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue on Friday criticized the controversial Arizona law saying, “Arizona went too far,” and called the concerned parties, “we need to fix Arizona and do it as fast as possible.”
On the question of immigration, he said everyone in this room is an immigrant except if there is a Native American, adding, “We need immigrants. We need guest workers. We desperately need H1B1 visa people who come to this country to do PhD... we need to keep them here. It is quite difficult now.”
Donohue urged Congress, the Obama Administration and the unions to do the needful for passing the pending free trade agreements with Columbia, Panama and South Korea cautioning that the European Union and Canada are on the way to completing them.
Donohue, addressing a luncheon at the National Press Club said, “Canada’s parliament is poised to give final approval to an FTA with Columbia as early a next month (June) and Canada and Panama signed and FTA today (Friday),
“The EU will sign FTAs next Wednesday with Columbia and Panama. The EU concluded negotiations for an FTA with South Korea last november,” he added.
Donohue minced no words saying, “It will mean that the EU and Canada will be able to sell their products in those markets at a better price. That means we will lose market share and jobs.”
Presenting a grim scenario for the America, Donohue cited WTO figures noting, “there are 262 free trade agreements in force around the globe today, but the United States, the largest economy, has just 11 FTAs covering 17 countries.”
Donohue had a word of praise for the Obama Administration on the need to modernize the U.S. export control system, saying, “And on this point I want to give the administration credit. We know they are reviewing this matter and crafting a proposal.”
During question-answer session, Donohue felt that Greek debt situation will have an impact on the U.S. efforts to increase its exports despite most of U.S. trade being with Germany, France and the U.K.,
While countries globally "raise protectionist barriers to tilt the playing field to their advantage, favor domestic industries and keep markets closed," he said it would be wrong for the U.S. to retaliate in the same fashion.
Donahue said he fails "to see how punishing our own consumers will help families or create new jobs. These measures would do nothing to expand our own sales abroad."
He said his approach would be "one that opens markets and expands trade and investment, not one that closes markets and cedes the global marketplace to our competitors."
On the Chinese currency issue, Donohue said he was going to China in the coming weeks, to stress that Beijing must adjust its currency by letting it appreciate.
