Reno, NV (AHN) - Hindu leaders in the U.S. have protested a Fox News Channel opinion show's remark describing the holy Ganges River as a "disease" and called the attention of News Corporation and the Federal Communications Commission on the matter.
Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism based in Reno, Nevada, said that Glenn Beck must explain his statement in "The One Thing" show that Ganges "sounds like a disease."
"Ganges was sacred to one billion Hindus worldwide and such remarks were very hurtful to the devotees," he said.
Zed also called on Rupert Murdoch, chairman of the channel's owner, News Corp., and Fox chairman Roger Ailes to issue a statement on the matter.
Zed also urged Fox and its owner News Corporation to be more sensitive when handling faith related subjects.
Bhavna Shinde of Forum for Hindu Awakening wrote protest letters to News Corp. and Fox News citing Beck's remark as insensitive and derogatory.
Next month, some 100 million Hindus will take a traditional dip in the Ganges in the belief that its sacred waters will erase one's sins. The event is called Kumbh Mela.
