Google to produce, sell own "Nexus One" phones: report
LOS ANGELES - Google Inc <GOOG.O> plans to sell its own cellphone direct to consumers as soon as next year, bypassing wireless operators in a rare strategic move, the Wall Street Journal cited sources as saying on Saturday. Called the Nexus One and made by smartphone maker HTC, the phone will run on the search giant's Android operating system -- around which Motorola <MOT.N> and other cellphone makers have built devices -- and will be sold online, the newspaper cited persons familiar with the matter as saying.
Apple fires back at Nokia in patents battle
SAN FRANCISCO/HELSINKI - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> accused Nokia <NOK1V.HE> of anti-competitive practices and patent infringement on Friday, escalating a legal battle as they fight for market share in smartphones. Analysts say the dispute, potentially involving hundreds of millions of dollars in annual royalties, reflects the shifting balance of power in the mobile industry as cellphones morph into handheld computers that can play video games and surf the Web.

Craigslist CEO: EBay's Whitman turned back on us
WILMINGTON, Del./SAN FRANCISCO - Craigslist's chief executive said on Friday he was so alarmed by a "condescending" attempt by his counterpart at eBay to reassure him about their relations that he started maneuvering to remove the online auctioneer from his board of directors. Jim Buckmaster told a Delaware court on Friday that eBay's then-CEO Meg Whitman "slammed the door" on his request in 2007 to find a new owner for Craigslist shares held by eBay, which had just launched a rival U.S. classified ad business.
U.S. teens ignore laws against texting while driving
LOS ANGELES - Karen Cordova, a 17-year-old high school student and part-time supermarket cashier, admits she sometimes texts friends while driving home from work late at night, lonely and bored. The Arizona teenager knows it's illegal in Phoenix and dangerous. She once almost drifted into oncoming traffic while looking at her phone.
Verizon CEO says no need to buy DIRECTV
NEW YORK - Verizon Communications Inc <VZ.N> has no need to buy DIRECTV <DTV.O>, the company's Chief Executive said on Friday in response to a question about recent speculation the Verizon might buy the satellite TV provider. "There's nothing to that," Seidenberg told Reuters on the sidelines of a Nasdaq conference about corporate governance. "We don't have any strategic need."
U.S. wireless users satisfied, FCC should help more: GAO
WASHINGTON - Most customers are generally satisfied with their wireless telephone service, but many are frustrated with fees associated with ending their contract to switch carriers, according to a congressional study released on Thursday. The study by the Government Accountability Office also found that the Federal Communications Commission needs to improve how it processes customers' complaints.
Savvy kids can access explicit online worlds: FTC
WASHINGTON - Even a minimally savvy youngster can figure out how to access violent or explicitly sexual content in some virtual or Internet worlds, the Federal Trade Commission said on Thursday. In its survey of online worlds, where users create digital alter egos called avatars and interact with other users' avatars, the commission found that seven of the worlds with the most explicit sex and violence set a minimum age of 13 and an eighth set a minimum age of 18.
U.S. video game sales down 7.6 pct in November: NPD
SAN FRANCISCO - Sales of video game equipment and software in the United States fell 7.6 percent in November to $2.7 billion, research group NPD said on Thursday, as the struggling industry limped into the crucial holiday sales period. Hardware sales fell 13.4 percent, while software sales dropped 3.1 percent. The results were worse than some analysts had expected.
Video games take bigger role in education
RALEIGH, North Carolina - Teachers trying to get students interested in molecular biology or space now have a new tool -- video games. As more children grow up playing video games, educators are partnering with game developers and scientists to create new interactive experiences for the classroom.
