ShareThis April 14, 2010 6:22 a.m. EST Topics: patient, medical research, medicine, health, United States David Goodhue - AHN News Reporter Boston, MA, United States (AHN) - Boston health researchers are warning that popular drugs prescribed to treat epilepsy symptoms, as well as symptoms of depression and neuralgia, are associated with an increased risk of suicide and violent death. The scientists, with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said the anti-convulsant medications gabapentin, lamotrigine, oxcarbazepine, tiagabine and valproate were linked to 827 suicidal acts and 41 violent deaths out of 297,620 people who were prescribed the drugs from July 2001 to December 2006. The researchers said in a statement that the great number of people taking these drugs makes their safety “an issue of great relevance.” The Food and Drug Administration in 2008 mandated that warning labels about the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors must be placed on anti-convulsant medication packaging. The study is published in the April 14 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
