GRAY,Associated Press Writer - Thursday, April 15 Send IM Story Print BANGKOK – Hundreds of pro-government Thais rallied in Bangkok Wednesday to challenge rivals who want to oust the prime minister, reflecting the deepening rift in a country mired in political chaos. Anti-government protesters, meanwhile, began emptying one of their encampments in the historic part of Bangkok and moving to their second base in the commercial heart of the Thai capital. Organizers said the aim was to consolidate their forces. A failed attempt by security forces to flush thousands of red-shirted protesters out of the old Bangkok encampment on Saturday ended with bloody street battles, leaving 23 people dead and hundreds wounded in Thailand's worst political violence in nearly two decades. Twenty-one people were killed during the fighting while a soldier and a civilian succumbed to injuries late Tuesday and early Wednesday, said the government's Emergency Center. Another 195 people remain hospitalized, 14 of them in intensive care. The Red Shirts accuse Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva of coming to power illegally. They want him to dissolve Parliament immediately and hold elections. In a reflection of growing divisions in the country, about 700 people opposed to the dissolution of Parliament gathered at Victory Monument, a war memorial in the middle of a huge traffic roundabout in Bangkok. The demonstrators said they were not members of the "Yellow Shirts," a well known pro-government group bitterly opposed to the Red Shirts, but were simply ordinary citizens concerned about the political instability. Most of them came together through Facebook by joining a fan page called "No Dissolution of Parliament Group," which had a following of 283,836 by late Wednesday. "I think it's time to make our voice heard," said Somchai Siripaiboonpong, 57, who works in finance. "Each claims that they're the majority, but no one group is representative of the population," he said. Some of the demonstrators heckled, taunted and threw plastic bottles at Red Shirts who drove past Victory Monument. But the two groups stayed away from each other, and there was no violence. Somchai said the Red Shirts should agree to a referendum instead of protesting. "By continuing to demonstrate like this, the economy is just going to tank. Worse, it would open a window of opportunity for some factions in the army to stage a coup," he said. Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said arrest warrants were out for "terrorists" linked to the Red Shirts who had fired assault rifles and grenade launchers during the savage, chaotic confrontation Saturday, the Thai-language newspaper Matichon said. He said some of them were working as guards at makeshift stages set up by the protesters and that the protest leaders knew of their "terrorist acts." Both sides blame each other for the killings, with the government insisting its troops only fired over the heads of demonstrators. Reporters saw and photographed weapons in the hands of some in the clashes who appeared to be on the side of the protesters. Nattawut Saikua, a protest leader, said that the Red Shirts would have completed by Thursday their move to the second encampment, on a main street lined with upscale shopping malls and five-star hotels that they have occupied since April 3. The shopping malls have mostly remained shut and hotels have seen large numbers of guests check out, causing millions of dollars in losses. Another protest leader, Weng Tojirakarn, said the Red Shirts would decide their next step after Friday when a raucous three-day celebration of Thai New Year, or Songkran, ends. At loggerheads in the yearslong struggle for power in Thailand are the rural supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra _ who was ousted in a 2006 coup _ and the traditional ruling elite represented by Abhisit and his allies. The coup was followed by elections in December 2007 that were won by Thaksin's political allies. But they faced months of street protests by Yellow Shirts who accuse Thaksin of corruption. Although the pro-Thaksin government did not bow to the protests it was forced out of office by a court decision that the Red Shirts found dubious. The resulting political vacuum was filled by Abhisit's opposition coalition in December 2008. The Red Shirts claim Abhisit, whose supporters include business leaders, the military brass and members of the urban middle class, took power illegitimately because he didn't win any election. On Monday, the Election Commission ordered the dissolution of the ruling Democrat Party for allegedly concealing campaign donations, and the powerful army chief also threw his weight behind calls for new elections. The Red Shirt leaders dismissed the developments as just a ploy by the government to buy time.
