Ann Arbor, MI, United States (AHN) - A new study suggests obesity plays a larger role than other factors like gender, race, socioeconomic status or academic achievement in the likelihood of a child being bullied.
Researchers with the University of Michigan studied 821 children, and evaluated the relationship between the child’s weight and his or her odds of being bullied as reported by the child’s teacher, mother or the child him or herself.
The researchers concluded that weight alone is a predictor of children being picked on in third, fifth and sixth grades.
The findings are significant since both obesity in children and bullying are identified as growing problems in the United States.
The report, “Weight status as a predictor of being bullied in third through sixth grades,” is available online and will be in the June issue of the journal Pediatrics.
