Washington, DC, DC, United States (AHN) - The Food and Drug Administration is warning people not to consume a dietary supplement made in California because it may contain dangerous levels of lead.

The product is Vita Breath and it is made by American Herbal Lab in Rosemead, Calif. It is marketed on the Internet and at health fairs as a treatment for Asthma, the FDA said in a statement.

The FDA says it was notified by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene that it had a patient with lead poisoning who reported taking Vita Breath and two other herbal products.

The health department analyzed a sample of Vita Breath and found it to have 1,100 parts per million of lead. That is more than 10,000 times higher than FDA’s maximum recommended level for lead in candy.

The agency is further investigating the product with the cooperation of public health officials in New York and California.
