Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Singapore Asia Pacific World Seoul shares fall as tech, Doosan firms drop Reuters - Monday, May 3 Send IM Story Print * Doosan Group shares tumble on construction arm worries * Tech shares fall as earnings cheer fades; chips down * LG Display sheds as much as 4.9 pct after patent dispute By Rhee So-eui SEOUL, May 3 - Seoul shares fell 1.2 percent on Monday with losses in technology heavyweights and Doosan Group companies driving the index lower and weak U.S. markets and China's tightening move dampening investor appetite. With the earnings season nearing an end and negative news from overseas weighing, analysts expected the market's uptrend since late February to stall for the time being. "Uncertainties are growing on many fronts, with Goldman and financial reforms, with Greece, and also with the oil spill," said Kim June-ki, an analyst at SK Securities, referring to a giant oil spill off the U.S. Gulf of Mexico that threatens an economic and environmental disaster. Shares in units of Doosan Group, a construction and power equipment focused conglomerate, fell sharply with analysts citing market talk over Doosan Engineering & Construction's <011160.KS> financial problems. News that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il likely entered China for a rare visit had little impact, but analysts said the market was closely watching South Korea's response to the North after a warship sank last month on a suspected North Korean attack. [ID:nTOE641017] The Korea Composite Stock Price Index <.KS11> finished 1.17 percent lower at 1,721.21 points. The index rose 2.9 percent in April and 6.2 percent in March. After stellar first-quarter results, technology shares turned lower as the investor focus has shifted to uncertainties over the second half outlook rather than current business strength. Top memory chip makers Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> and Hynix Semiconductor <000660.KS> fell 2.36 percent and 2.82 percent, respectively, after Samsung's plans to increase capital spending triggered oversupply concerns and hit U.S. semiconductor stocks. LG Display <034220.KS>, the world's No. 2 maker of liquid crystal display panels, ended down 2.51 percent after dropping as much as 4.9 percent. Analysts cited profit taking after the stock rose more than a third since end-February while a patent dispute with Taiwanese rival AU Optronics <2409.TW> appeared to have some impact. [ID:nTOE64100B] Doosan Group's building arm Doosan E&C tumbled 8.76 percent on concerns that a prolonged weakness in the local construction market was weighing on its financials. Construction equipment maker Doosan Infracore <042670.KS> fell 8.52 percent, also hit by the tightening move in its key Chinese market. Power equipment maker Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction <034020.KS> shed 8.65 percent. A Doosan Group spokesman said rumours of financial difficulties at Doosan E&C were "groundless," noting a recent bond issue by the firm had been well received in the market. The brokerage sector index <.KS53> ended down 2.06 percent and No. 2 local life insurer Korea Life <088350.KS> fell 2.29 percent ahead of bigger rival Samsung Life's market debut next week. Kia Motors <000270.KS> rose 1.46 percent after the carmaker reported a 49 percent jump in April sales from a year earlier, driven by new model launches. But affiliate Hyundai Motor <005380.KS> declined 1.82 percent after posting a month-on-month fall in sales. [ID:nTOE63S00M] Data showed earlier on Monday South Korea's consumer prices rose faster than expected in April, adding to expectations of stronger inflationary pressure.
