Loma Linda, CA, United States (AHN) - Researchers analyzing more than two dozen medical trials concluded that eating nuts may be an effective way to improve cholesterol levels.
Loma Linda University researchers said in a statement that consuming about 2.4 ounces of nuts a day was associated with an average 5-percent reduction in total cholesterol, a 7.4-percent reduction in low-density lipoprotein – i.e., “bad cholesterol” – and an 8.3-percent change in ratio of LDL cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
Nuts also appear to lower triglyceride levels in those with high levels, but not those with lower levels.
Nuts have high amounts of unsaturated fatty acids, dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants and phytoesterols, the researchers said.
The study is published in the May 10 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
