ShareThis May 10, 2010 2:11 p.m. EST Topics: politics, diplomacy, international relations, United States Windsor Genova - AHN News News Writer Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell met Myanmar’s detained democracy and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi at a state guesthouse Monday. Campbell and Suu Kyi discussed the planned elections of the junta later this year. The Nobel peace laureate, who has been under house arrest the past 20 years, was escorted by government authorities to the guesthouse, where the two talked for one hour and 45 minutes talk. Prior to talks with Suu Kyi, the American envoy met with a member of the former opposition party, the National League for Democracy. Some members of the NLD plan to form a new party, the National Democratic Force. He also talked with representatives of the pro-junta Union Solidarity and Democracy Party. Campbell arrived in Myanmar on Sunday and met with several ministers and other high-ranking government officials, except junta chief Senior General Than Shwe. The envoy discussed with them the plans and objectives of the government in the next few years. Meanwhile, the NDF will participate in the elections, according to member Khin Maung Swe. Khin said participating in the elections will be a chance for the country to transition to democracy.
