Honolulu, HI, United States (AHN) - After holding the seat for nearly two decades, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is pulling out of a special election in Hawaii for the seat of former Rep. Neil Abercrombie, who retired this year.
The DCCC, which is in charge of raising funds and rallying support for Democratic candidates for the House, revealed its decision to Roll Call on Monday.
Spokesman Jennifer Crider told the newspaper the committee "will not be investing additional resources" in the race because "local Democrats were unable to work out their differences." The DCCC "will save the resources [it] would have invested in the Hawaii special election this month for the general election in November,” she added.
A Republican, Honolulu City Council member Charles Djou, leads two Democrats in a race that observers had warned would divide Democratic voters in favor of a GOP victory.
Voters in the district, which includes Honolulu, began receiving their ballots by mail on May 1. The vote-by-mail special election has no primaries, and ballots will be counted on May 22.
Djou has 39.5 percent voter support while former Rep. Ed Case and state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa are tied at 25.5 percent, according to a survey by Aloha Vote. Last week, the councilman led Case by 8 points and Hanabusa by 14 points in a Honolulu Advertiser poll.
The DCCC is said to have favored Case as the party's bet. It commissioned Harstad Strategic Research to conduct a poll in late April that found Case ahead of Hanabusa, 61 percent to 23 percent, in a two-way match-up.
The former congressman would also beat Djou 47 percent to 39 percent in a head-to-head race, while Hanabusa would lose to the Republican, 38 percent to 48 percent. In terms of favorability, the Harstad poll found Case with 63 percent of voters viewing him positively, while Djou had 55 percent and Hanabusa 41 percent.
Hanabusa, who has endorsements from the state teachers association and the local Sierra Club, last week found the need to "reaffirm her commitment to running for the vacant congressional seat."
“I’m staying in this race for the people who have supported me," she said in a press conference.
Djou, a former minority floor leader in the state house, only needs 35 percent to win because there are a total of 14 contenders in the winner-take-all contest.
If Djou wins, he will serve out the remaining months of the term of Abercombie, who left Congress after 10 terms to run for governor. Since the winner will only serve until January next year, Democrats have a chance to consolidate their forces and take the seat in the general election for a full term in November.
Nonetheless, a Republican win in the district would deal a significant blow to Democrats ahead of a difficult time defending their majority in the mid-terms because of fallout from the healthcare debate. Democrats lost a seat held by the Kennedy family for five decades in a special election in early this year.
Hawaii's 1st congressional district is also where President Barack Obama was born, and it voted 72 percent for him in his 2008 campaign against Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
