Romania: the last journey now broadcast live

BUCHAREST (AFP) - – "Welcome!" The heartfelt wish above a picture showing a casket inside an open tomb encourages Romanians to watch the last journey of their loved ones, or not, live on the Internet.
"Given that tragic events can occur unexpectedly, when relatives may be tens of miles away, Funerar TV offers you the opportunity to accompany your loved ones on their last journey via Internet", the homepage of a new site, funerartv.ro, reads.
With prices from 170 to 840 euros, according to the number of cameras used, the Internet site "will broadcast live the entire funeral service, from the preparation to the end."
A "reservation" is nevertheless required, the owner of the site says, without mentioning how many days in advance this should be made.
"On the beneficiary's request, the broadcast can be encoded," he added, at the risk of spurring frustration among funeral lovers.
Though Funerar TV says it is "the only site of its kind", a Romanian TV channel, OTV, has scored sky-high ratings in recent years by broadcasting live funerals of comedians or local mafia figures.
