Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - Pittsburgh is marking the World Environment Day 2010 on Saturday as the North American host city by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) as noted by Secretary of State in a statement.
“The United States is proud to join with the international community to mark June 5 as World Environment Day, as we have since 1973,” said Hillary Clinton on Saturday, highlighting the role of Pittsburgh, “And I note with pleasure the selection of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as North American Host City, reaffirming its leadership in regional innovation and in the transformation to a greener economy.”
Clinton cited President Barack Obama’s concern with regard to ongoing catastrophic events in the Gulf of Mexico, saying, “Today, the United States is learning firsthand how fragile our ecosystems are and how quickly a treasured landscape can become endangered.
As President Obama recently stated, protecting the earth’s biodiversity, be it in the Gulf of Mexico or elsewhere, is a responsibility all of us share.”
Pittsburgh-area government officials, business indexes, organizations and individuals hosted a series of World Environment Day events, as well as events taking place during the six weeks that “bridge the gap” between Earth Day on April 22 and World Environment Day on June 5.
The urgency and scope of our shared responsibility is reflected in this year’s theme, “Many species, one planet, one future,” Clinton noted in her statement.
Clinton reiterated support for “partnerships such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN),” adding that the U.S. was “working to build similar networks in Central America and South Asia.”
