Protest-hit Bollywood awards get under way in Sri Lanka
COLOMBO (AFP) - – India's version of Hollywood's Oscars ceremony got under way in Sri Lanka's capital Saturday without some of the megastars who faced pressure from Tamil groups to stay away from Colombo.
The Indian International Film Academy (IIFA) awards opened at Colombo's Sugathadasa Stadium, marking the climax to three days of events connected with the "Bollywood Oscars," which have been held at a foreign venue since 2000.
Sri Lanka rolled out the red carpet for India's film fraternity, but IIFA's own brand ambassador and actor, Amitabh Bachchan, stayed away following protests by pro-Tamil groups outside his Mumbai home.
The Colombo ceremonies were marred by boycott calls from the influential Tamil film industry in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which has close cultural and religious links with Sri Lanka's ethnic Tamil minority.
The Tamil lobby has argued that staging the event in Colombo endorses the Sri Lankan government of President Mahinda Rajapakse.
The president is under pressure from the international community to accept a probe over his controversial military strategy that crushed Tamil rebels last year, ending nearly four decades of civil strife.
The United Nations has said that at least 7,000 Tamil civilians were also killed in the final months of the fighting.
Indian lawmaker Sashi Tharoor told celebrities and fans at the start of the awards Saturday that he was convinced Sri Lanka was heading for reconciliation after years of war.
"Some people in India would prefer if we were not here," Tharoor said. "Their concerns are more emotional than political. Now is the time of the film world, it's their turn to build a new bridge to Sri Lanka."
The Tamil lobby had forced megastar Bachchan, also known as "the Big B," to stay away together with his actor son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai -- Bollywood's leading couple.
Another superstar, Shah Rukh Khan, who escaped a bomb attack on his concert in Colombo in 2004, also stayed away.
Aamir Khan's hit movie "3 Idiots" was set to sweep the boards Saturday, after scooping a string of awards in the technical categories.
The film -- a coming-of-age comedy about three struggling students at a top engineering college -- has been nominated in 12 of the 13 main categories.
It has already won eight of the 12 technical awards announced last month, including best screenplay and best cinematography.
Actor-producer-director Aamir Khan, who stars in "3 Idiots," had also skipped Saturday's ceremony in Colombo.
