Among its 2010 list is Wilderness Battlefield in Virginia, where legendary generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant faced off against one another during the Civil War. The battlefield will soon be the site of a 240,000 square feet Wal-Mart store if a legal challenge from local residents and the National Trust for Historic Preservation is defeated. In Connecticut, one of the nation's most scenic roads, the 70-year-old Merritt Parkway, is threatened by changes being made by the state Department of Transportation to allow more traffic. The cash-strapped transport agency is realigning roads and replacing bridges along the 37.5 miles of the parkway at the cost of losing the site's unique character and natural landscaping. The list also includes Hinchliffe Stadium, one of only three remaining Negro League stadiums in the nation. The 10,000-seat stadium is owned by the Paterson Public Schools and has been closed since 1997. Deterioration and neglect is threatening the landmark, once home to the New York Black Yankees and legendary Hall of Famer Larry Doby. Hinchliffe has been at the mercy of elements for the last 17 years, and it and its surrounding area have been attacked by arsonists more than 30 times over the past four years. Neglect and the lack of public funds have similarly threatened an 80-year-old Art Deco structure in Meridian, MS. Threefoot Building is a 16-story skyscraper that was famed for its polychrome terra cotta and granite exterior and etched bronze elevator doors. It closed a decade ago because of deterioration and extensive vacancies. The building's terra cotta tiles are now falling off and water has seeped into many areas, prompting concerns among local residents that the city council will have the structure demolished. Threefoot Building is owned by the city of Meridian and is part of the the Mississippi Landmark List. A developer has expressed interest in restoring the structure to operate as a hotel, but the city was unable to provide supporting funds or incentives to the developer. In Michigan, 2,500 acres of landscape that features 19th Century summer camps and cottage communities, America's oldest operational hand-cranked chain ferry, and the century-old Ox-Bow School of Art, part of the Chicago Art Institute, is in threatened by commercial development. The Saugatuck Dunes Coastal Area lies along the shores of Lake Michigan and is the site of rare freshwater dunes that are the habitat of several endangered species. The area also has Native American grounds and trails and the buried remains of an early 19th Century mill town and port. A proposed 400-acre residential development that includes a hotel, mall, and marina is threatening Saugatuck. The land for development was bought in 2006 by a company, Singapore Dunes LLC, which has filed lawsuits and tax appeals to try to change Saugatuck Township's zoning laws that prohibit such kind of development. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has been identifying endangered sites since 1988. Of the 222 places it has cited, only seven have been lost. The annual list has been successful in pushing local communities and public agencies to protect historical, irreplaceable sites that are part of the national heritage. "Beginning in 1989, some neighborhoods in Pasadena and South Pasadena, CA, appeared on the list for five straight years because the state highway department wanted to ram a freeway through them – but after a lot of hard work by a lot of determined people over a lot of years, the highway plan was finally scrapped," Dwight Young, senior communications associate for the Trust, wrote in a blog post. In St. Augustine, FL, similar efforts saved the Bridge of Lions from demolition. The bridge was restored and opened in March, 13 years after it was declared endangered. "It may take a long time, but stubborn minds do get changed, wrong-headed plans do get shelved, wrecking-balls and bulldozers do go away, padlocked gates and boarded-up windows do get opened," Young said. Included in this year's endangered places is Pagat, the site of an ancient village of the Chamorro, the indigenous people of Guam. Pagat is one of the last remaining Chamorro settlements. It dates back to 700 AD and contains the remains of prehistoric structural stone foundations called lattes, freshwater caves, medicinal plants and pottery of the Chamorro, who continue to hold rituals at the site. The U.S. Marine Corps plans to build firing ranges on a bluff above Pagat, as well as buildings to house about 9,000 Marines and their families and a wharf that would destroy a 71-acre coral reef. "The U.S. military already occupies and restricts access to numerous places of cultural importance to the Chamorro people on Guam. The expansion of training facilities to the area surrounding Pågat is unacceptable," the Trust said in its announcement. National Trust president Richard Moe revealed this year's list at Washington, D.C.'s Metropolitan AME Church, also an endangered site. The red brick Victorian Gothic-style church was built in 1886 and is an integral part of the civil rights movement. It hosted the funerals of abolitionist Frederick Douglass in 1895 and Rosa Parks a century later.
