Google beats Microsoft in smartphones, catching Apple
PARIS - Google <GOOG.O> has overtaken Microsoft <MSFT.O> in the battle over the software that runs mobile phones and is challenging Apple for share of the fast growing smartphone market. Google's Android was the fourth most popular operating system on smartphones sold in the first quarter, research firm Gartner said on Wednesday, putting the company in a good position as handsets look set to surpass computers for browsing the Web.
Lawmakers ask FTC to look into Google Wi-Fi data
WASHINGTON - Two lawmakers who co-chair the House Privacy Caucus asked the Federal Trade Commission if Google <GOOG.O> broke the law in collecting WiFi and other Internet data while taking photographs for its Street View product. Reps. Joe Barton, a Republican, and Edward Markey, a Democrat, wrote to the FTC chairman to ask if the agency was looking into the data collection, which Google has said was "a mistake."
Pakistan blocks Facebook over caricatures

The order followed a decision by the Lahore High Court temporarily banning Facebook in Pakistan after the country's media reported that the competition would be held on May 20.
Google unveils Web app store for games
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> showed off a new online store for consumers to purchase games, magazines and other applications through its Chrome browser, in a move to give the search giant a central role in the next generation of Web media and entertainment. "Advertising has been a very important form of monetization on the Web, but we want to create other alternatives as well," Google Vice President Sundar Pichai said at the company's annual developer conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.
Apple laptop user has "vultures" lawsuit dismissed
NEW YORK - A federal judge has dismissed a plaintiff's lawsuit against Apple Inc <AAPL.O> that accused company employees of waiting like "vultures" to spy on her every time she used an Apple laptop to access the Internet. Leslie Carr sought to recover $60 million for trauma, which she said kept her from publishing on the Web. She alleged, among other things, that each time she used the laptop to go online, "there would be a mass number of Apple employees waiting greedily like vultures to survey and monitor my life."
Twitter expects hundreds of advertisers
SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter, the rapidly expanding microblogging service, plans to have hundreds of advertisers using its new ad system in the fourth quarter as the company ramps up plans to become a self-sustaining, profitable business. Chief Operating Officer Dick Costolo said the company's newly-launched advertising system would provide a key pillar in Twitter's plans to turns its popular service into a significant money-making operation that can justify its rich valuation.
Samsung eyes early launch of bada-phone
SUWON, South Korea - Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> plans to launch the first smartphone based on its own operating system in the next few weeks, as it seeks to catch up with bigger rivals in the booming high-end market. "You need a proprietary system to drive growth in the smartphone market and bada will do the job, as it is designed to support all segments from low to high end," Lee Ho-soo, head of Samsung's smartphone operating system, told the Reuters Global Technology Summit on Wednesday.
Mobile music downloads struggle to make headway
PARIS - Fewer than 2 percent of mobile users in the United States and western Europe used their phone to download music in the first quarter, showing the uphill task facing Apple iTunes challengers like Nokia. Although 24 percent listened to music on their phone, the vast majority loaded the tracks on to their handset from music they already had on a computer, according to data from industry tracker comScore released on Wednesday.
VCs see Android gaining on iPhone
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is posing a bigger challenge to Apple Inc <AAPL.O> in the mobile world as more and more start-ups develop applications for Google's Android software, venture capitalists said on Tuesday. While Apple's app store offers more than 200,000 games, tools and other software to jazz up the iPhone, against just 38,000 for Android, the openness of Google's mobile operating system is helping it gain popularity with developers.
Major operators to roll out LiMo phones this year
PARIS - Wireless Linux group LiMo expects three major operators to offer handsets using its platform this year, to compete with news rivals Google and Apple, its executive director said. So far only Vodafone <VOD.L> has launched a model in Europe, using its Linux-based operating system, while 60 handsets were launched using the platform, mostly in Japan and South-Korea. "The first one was Vodafone and three other carriers will follow this year," Morgan Gillis, Executive Director at LiMo foundation, said at the Reuters Global Technology Summit.
