ADVERTISEMENT Yukio Hatoyama, head of the centre-left Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), is set to take the top job on Wednesday, two-and-a-half weeks after his party's stunning election victory changed the country's political landscape. Campaigning on a promise of reform and change, Hatoyama ousted unpopular Prime Minister Taro Aso and his conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has ruled Japan almost continuously for more than half a century. "Tomorrow will be the dawn of Japan's new politics, which I want to build together with you," Hatoyama told party elders meeting to put the finishing touches to the cabinet charged with pushing an ambitious reform agenda. "I would like to stand in the frontline of this," said the 62-year-old political blueblood, a US-trained engineering scholar who defected from the LDP and co-founded the untested DPJ more than a decade ago. In a final pep talk to party lawmakers, almost half of them newcomers, Hatoyama pledged to push his people-centred agenda, recalling grim conditions faced by voters he had met as they tried to find jobs and raise children. "We will enter uncharted waters in politics," Hatoyama said. "Great challenges lie ahead of us... Let's go for it!" As the DPJ put together its cabinet, Hirohisa Fujii, 77, was tapped as finance minister, a post he briefly held in the early 1990s, when he left the LDP to join a short-lived coalition government, Jiji Press said. Fujii, who worked for more than two decades as a finance ministry official, will be tasked with reviving Asia's biggest economy as it emerges from its deepest slump since World War II and reducing record-high unemployment. He has been vocal in attacking the outgoing government's stimulus package, vowing to redirect what his party says is wasteful spending. The next foreign minister looks set to be Katsuya Okada, 56, a former DPJ leader and one-time trade ministry bureaucrat, known for his deep policy knowledge and his strait-laced "Mr Clean" image. One of his jobs will be to help maintain Japan's strong US alliance, despite signals Japan may scale down some military ties, while pushing the DPJ's goal of forging closer links with Asia, especially China. He would likely join Hatoyama for next week's UN General Assembly, an international meeting on climate change and a G20 summit in Pittsburgh on reviving the global economy. Hatoyama, after criticising "US-led globalism" in a recent essay and seeking a "more equal" relationship with the United States, will seek to reassure President Barack Obama that Japan remains a key ally. Hatoyama also reportedly offered cabinet posts to the heads of his two junior coalition partners, whose support his party needs to control the upper house, which can stall or block legislation. Social Democratic Party leader Mizuho Fukushima, 53, accepted the post of state minister in charge of consumer affairs, media reports said, making her the only woman known to have been chosen for the cabinet. She would also oversee family affairs and be charged with addressing Japan's declining birthrate, which is projected to see Japan's fast-greying population start to shrink soon. Shizuka Kamei, leader of the People's New Party, has been offered a post overseeing postal and financial affairs, reports said. The party of Kamei, 72, has campaigned against the signature market reform of a previous LDP government, the privatisation of Japan's massive postal system, and would likely move to reverse it. The DPJ also confirmed party heavyweight Ichiro Ozawa as the next secretary general and pledged to vote as one for Hatoyama as prime minister Wednesday.
