Google updates browser, plans to gain share
ADVERTISEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> has rolled out a new version of its Chrome Web browser and a version of the Mac browser for mainstream users will be available within months, as the company moves to double Chrome's market share. Almost exactly one year into Google's high-profile entry into the browser market dominated by Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>, the Internet search giant is a distant No. 4, with a market share of roughly 2.8 percent.
HP shows off new ultra-thin PCs, stylish netbook
SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> unveiled several new products for the important fall season, including thin and light laptop PCs and an eye-catching new netbook. The world's No. 1 PC maker has ably navigated a steep industry downturn in computer sales, managing to grow its global market share to 20 percent even as consumers and businesses dial back on spending.
Oracle ends computer tie-up with HP
BOSTON - Oracle Corp <ORCL.O> has ended a high-profile computer-building partnership with Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> as Oracle prepares to acquire Sun Microsystems Inc <JAVA.O>, a rival of HP. Sun, the world's No. 4 server maker, and Oracle have jointly developed a second-generation version of a specialized database computer, dubbed Exadata. Oracle and HP launched the first version a year ago.
Cablevision rolls out interactive ads for viewers
NEW YORK - New York cable TV operator Cablevision Systems Corp <CVC.N> said on Tuesday it is rolling out a service to enable subscribers to interact with commercials by clicking on their remote controls. The cable company is hoping to boost advertising revenue with the premium-priced interactive service that marketers can use to reach cable viewers, who click the 'select' button to receive product samples and brochure information.
Adobe to buy Omniture for $1.8 billion
BOSTON/SEATTLE - Adobe Systems Inc <ADBE.O> plans to pay $1.8 billion for fast-growing business software maker Omniture Inc <OMTR.O> as the maker of Photoshop and Acrobat looks to turn around declining sales. Adobe, which announced the deal on Tuesday as it reported lower quarterly sales and profit, has been struggling over the past year as the recession hurt technology spending and customers declined to upgrade older versions of its programs.
Wall Street Journal to charge mobile readers
NEW YORK - The Wall Street Journal soon will begin charging people to read the paper on mobile devices such as their BlackBerrys, the paper's owner Rupert Murdoch said on Tuesday. The move, which News Corp <NWSA.O> CEO Murdoch announced at a Goldman Sachs conference in New York, is an attempt to find a new way for the business daily to make more money from an increasingly popular way for people to access their news.
World teens cutting spending on clothes, games
HELSINKI - In the economic downturn, teenagers around the world have focused their spending cuts on clothes, games and food, according to a survey by networking site Habbo Hotel. The survey of 61,000 teenagers in more than 30 countries showed one teenager out of three is getting less money from their parents, with more than half of youngsters getting less to spend in the United States, Spain and Latin America.
No venture capital? Web start-ups look elsewhere
SAN FRANCISCO - Web start-up companies at this year's Tech Crunch conference face a financial climate that has dried up venture capital, forcing them to turn to friends, family and foundations. Dan Olsen, a Stanford Business School grad, was one of the many entrepreneurs presenting his newly developed software at the tech conference held in a converted wooden warehouse on Monday and Tuesday.
Chinese schools quietly discard controversial Web filter
BEIJING - Schools in Beijing are quietly removing the Green Dam filter, which was required for all school computers in July, due to complaints over problems with the software. China last month formally backed down on a plan to preinstall the Internet filter software on all new computers sold in the country after July 1 after an international and domestic outcry.
Scientists find virtual reality helps relieve pain
SEATTLE, Washington - Teenager Jordan Robinson has faced excruciating pain since a backyard prank went wrong but treatment with virtual reality has given him some relief. Robinson, 18, and his friends thought it would be fun to shoot flaming arrows at bags full of gasoline in his backyard but it turned out to be a very bad idea, landing him in hospital with severe burns on both of his legs.
