ADVERTISEMENT Park Yeon-Cha was charged last year with evading 29 billion won (23.9 million dollars) in taxes and with bribing politicians and officials, including a former presidential secretary, in return for business favours. Prosecutors in April summoned ex-president Roh Moo-Hyun for questioning about a one million dollar payment by Park to Roh's wife, and about a payment by Park worth five million dollars to the husband of one of Roh's nieces. Roh, 62, was never charged but on May 23 he jumped off a cliff near his retirement village, shocking the nation. Roh had apologised for his family's involvement in the case but had not admitted personal wrongdoing. Prosecutors closed the investigation against his family members after the suicide. The offences for which Park was jailed Wednesday did not relate to the payments to Roh's family. The sentence was lighter than the four-year jail term sought by the prosecution. The court also ordered Park, head of shoemaker Taekwang Industry, to pay a 30 billion won fine.
