The Rocklin Family Pet Shop and Self Serve Dog Wash began phasing out puppy sales this month. It hosted the Place SPCA adoption event on Friday. "We are excited about supporting our local shelters and helping the many wonderful cats and dogs that desperately need loving homes," said owners Alyce and Dale Glazer. Only one shop continues to sell puppies in the Sacramento area. In December, a Petland store in Roseville closed in the wake of an investigative report by News 10 that it had been selling animals from puppy mills. About a third of the nation's 9,000 independent pet retailers sell puppies, according to the Humane Society of the United States. The main supplier to these stores that sell puppies are facilities that mass produce animals, breeding them in cramped kennels without regard to their welfare. Documented conditions include overbreeding dogs, keeping them permanently confined in cages, inbreeding, little or no veterinary care, poor food and shelter. Apart from cruel living conditions that focus on profit, puppy mills contribute to pet overpopulation that results in millions of pets euthanized in shelters annually. A number of these facilities have been shut down by authorities after reports by advocacy groups. The HSUS estimates that 2 million to 4 million puppies from puppy mills are sold every year in the United States. The decision of the Rocklin Family Pet Shop not to sell puppies is the latest in a string of successes among animal welfare advocates. Over 400 pet stores across 35 states took the HSUS pledge not to support puppy mills, in December, the busiest puppy-buying season of the year. The pledge lets retailers support local animal adoption programs instead. Among the stores in Sacramento that took the pledge were Fruitridge Pet Shop, Launderdog & More and Wagger Pet Spa & Market.
