Two cars with dark tinted windows swept into the chalet's basement garage in the western ski resort of Gstaad, just before the Swiss justice ministry confirmed that the 76-year-old Oscar winning director had been released on bail. Shutters were open at the chalet which was bedecked with Christmas lights, while several people, including a woman, were seen there. Sources said Polanski's actress wife Emmanuelle Seigner and their two children Morgane and Elvis, were waiting to welcome him at the home in the quiet millionaire's winter playground where regulars include former James Bond actor Roger Moore, French rocker Johnny Hallyday, and Formula One racing boss Bernie Ecclestone. Elvis was later seen briefly, collecting firewood from the terrace. Private security guards kept watch while white indoor blinds or curtains covered the windows as television crews and photographers laid siege outside on an icy lane on the edge of Gstaad, nestled on the slope of a mountain valley. "Mr Polanski and his family say that it's no use waiting, he won't come out anyway," one of the guards told waiting media. Police officers, who were posted outside a couple of hours earlier, withdrew after Polanski's arrival. A Swiss court granted Polanski bail of 4.5 million Swiss francs (3 million euros, 4.5 million dollars) last week, on condition that he surrenders his passport and wears an electronic bracelet to stop him fleeing. "Roman Polanski was today released from custody pending extradition and transferred to Gstaad, where he is under house arrest at his chalet," the Federal Office of Justice said in a statement. "Polanski has undertaken not to leave his house and property at any time." The French-Polish film director has been hunted by the United States ever since he fled in 1978 after admitting unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. The maker of "Rosemary's Baby", "Chinatown" and other classics was detained on September 26 as he arrived in Switzerland to collect an award for his career at the Zurich film festival. After weeks in jail cells, he will be able to enjoy the pitturesque grounds of the 1,800 square metre (19,400 square foot) property, and officials have said he would be allowed to receive any visitors he wants. But Polanski was warned that he will forfeit his bail if he ventures any further, while Interpol has placed countries on alert in case he tries to flee Switzerland. "His house has also been fitted with an electronic monitoring system that is now active," the justice office said. "The permanent electronic tagging technology will trigger an alarm if Polanski leaves the house or removes the tagging bracelet," it added. Gstaad is a 67-kilometre (42-mile) drive from the closest French border post. Polanski has taken advantage of his French nationality over the years to avoid extradition. French authorities have spoken out against the US attempt to get Polanski. He was discreetly transferred from a jail in Winterthur, northeastern Switzerland, on Thursday in a bid to keep him out of the public eye. Polanski's lawyers have said he will not accept extradition, which is still being examined by Swiss authorities. Polanski's US legal team is due to ask a California appeals court on December 10 to dismiss the child sex conviction, legal sources said last month. Lawyers for the victim in the case, Samantha Geir, filed a court motion in October in Los Angeles, renewing calls for the case against the director to be dismissed because of the anguish the renewed attention was causing her.
