Senior Kashmir separatist wounded: Indian police

SRINAGAR, India (AFP) - – Gunmen shot and wounded a senior Muslim separatist in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said on Friday.

Fazal Haque Qureshi, a senior leader in the moderate faction of the region's main separatist alliance, was hit near his residence in the state summer capital Srinagar, a police officer said.

"He has got a head injury and he is being treated in a hospital," the officer said, asking not to be named.

Qureshi has been associated with the separatist struggle in Kashmir for more than two decades. In 2000 he mediated between the region's main rebel group Hizbul Mujahedin and Indian troops after Hizbul announced a ceasefire.

The ceasefire was withdrawn after a fortnight after India refused to involve Pakistan in talks to resolve the dispute over Kashmir.

Moderates had recently welcomed an Indian talks offer to resolve the dispute but hardliners and armed militants rejected the invite saying talks would be futile without Islamabad's inclusion.

Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack.

"It is an attempt to derail the peace process," the pro-India leader told reporters in Srinagar.

He said Qureshi's condition was "critical".

The attack came hours after hardline separatist Syed Ali Geelani gave police the slip and led thousands of Kashmiris in a protest demonstration against India's rule in the region, police and witnesses said.

Syed Ali Geelani, 80, who heads the hardline faction of main separatist alliance, managed to reach Bandipora town, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Srinagar, despite police having sealed all the entry points, they said.

Geelani emerged at the main mosque in the town, offered congregational prayers and later led thousands through the streets who chanted, "we want freedom" and "Allah is greater".

"We will take the ongoing freedom struggle to its logical conclusion," Geelani told the marchers before asking them to disperse peacefully.

In the neighbouring town of Handwara, police briefly detained senior separatist Yasin Malik and his dozen close aides before they could enter the town to take part in a similar demonstration, a police officer said.

The anti-India insurgency in Kashmir has left more than 47,000 people dead since it erupted in 1989.
