There's something in the air: augmented reality
ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands - Technophiles and developers seeking the next tech breakthrough were drawn to the Dutch city of Rotterdam on Friday to hear "augmented reality" promoted as a way of changing their view of the world. Unlike virtual reality, augmented reality combines real-world images with computer-generated images on a screen, usually in real time.
Comcast lands NBC in deal that reshapes media
NEW YORK - Comcast Corp <CMCSA.O> struck a deal to buy a majority stake in NBC Universal from General Electric Co <GE.N>, creating a media superpower that would control not just how television shows and movies are made, but how they are delivered to the home. The deal had been discussed for months and brought to light deep divisions over the future of the media business, with some lauding Comcast Chief Executive Officer Brian Roberts as a visionary and others calling it the most foolhardy acquisition since AOL bought Time Warner in 2001.
Teen Internet addicts more likely to self harm: study
SYDNEY - Teenagers who are addicted to the Internet are more likely to engage in self-harm behavior, according to an Australian-Chinese study. Researchers surveyed 1,618 adolescents aged 13 to 18 from China's Guangdong Province about behavior such as hitting themselves, pulling their own hair, or pinching or burning themselves, and gave them a test to gauge Internet addiction.
GM sees the driving future: it's a video game
LOS ANGELES - General Motors Co <GM.UL>, battling for survival for much of the past year, has cut loose designers to sketch out a vision of the ultimate youth car of the future -- a virtual one-wheeled wonder that would match wits with its driver. The GM entry for this year's design challenge at the Los Angeles auto show imagines a "Car Hero" software application -- reminiscent of the popular "Guitar Hero" video games -- intended to teach young motorists to drive.
Friendster to be sold by month's end: source
SHANGHAI - Friendster, one of the world's earliest social networking sites, will be sold to an Asian buyer by the end of December for at least $100 million, a source familiar with the matter said. Friendster, which predates Facebook and MySpace in the social networking space was founded in 2002. But it quickly lost ground to other social networking sites in the United States. Friendster is now mostly used in Asia where more than half of its registered 100 million users are from.
Yahoo sees exponential growth in mobile ads
NEW YORK - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> expects "exponential" growth in mobile advertising even as the overall market is only starting to emerge from its deep downturn, a top executive of the Internet media company said on Thursday. Yahoo's mobile advertising business, while small, has seen substantial growth, and the company is focused on boosting the number of mobile users as a way to attract more advertisers, Hilary Schneider, executive vice president of Yahoo North America, said at the Reuters Global Media Summit in New York.
University turns iPhones into musical instruments
NEW YORK - Welcome to an orchestra of the 21st century. iPhones are being used as musical instruments in a new course at an American university. Students at the University of Michigan are learning to design, build and play instruments on their Apple Inc. <AAPL.O> smartphones, with a public performance planned for December 9.
Google CEO says not to blame for news media woes
NEW YORK - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is not to blame for the news industry's problems but is committed to playing a role in helping struggling publishers survive the transition to the online age, CEO Eric Schmidt said. Publishers need to explore new ways to make money from news on the Web, including the traditional advertising-based model as well as subscription-based access to content, Schmidt wrote in an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal.
Nokia says halving smartphone offering
HELSINKI - The world's top cell phone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> will drastically cut back on the number of different smartphone models it rolls out next year as the Finnish firm tries to shrug off new rivals Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and RIM <RIM.TO>. Nokia continues to sell more smartphones than any of its rivals, but has lost ground as competition grows.
Google sees growth in online video ads
NEW YORK - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is banking on significant growth in online video ads as marketers become more sophisticated at targeting consumers interactively, a senior executive at the Web search giant said on Thursday. "The one big shift in the next three to five years is going to be video advertising," Nikesh Arora, president of global sales operations and business development, said at the Reuters Global Media Summit in New York.
