Ailing Dennis Hopper gets Hollywood star
LOS ANGELES in weight and to be too weak to continue chemotherapy.
Fox cancels "24" TV show; movie version is next
LOS ANGELES - The Fox TV network on Friday stopped the clock on its action adventure series "24," ending one of its most successful dramas as ratings began to slip in its current, eighth season. The final, two-hour program will air on May 24, and in the countdown to that last show, the network will air 11 hours of uninterrupted episodes on Monday nights.
Slime flies at Kids Choice, Michelle Obama honored
LOS ANGELES - The slime flew, singer Katy Perry blew -- her nose -- and first lady Michelle Obama picked up a "Big Help" award from the youth of America at the Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday. The awards are given by the Nickelodeon television network and voted on by young viewers and families who watch it. Each year the program is most notable for green "slime" that shoots into the air and rains down on audience members and Hollywood stars who this year included Will Smith and Tyra Banks.
White House gate-crashers get TV show parts: report
LOS ANGELES - A Washington couple who gate-crashed a state dinner at the White House in November will be featured in a new series of the Bravo cable channel's popular reality TV franchise "Real Housewives," The Daily Beast news website reported on Friday. Michaele and Tareq Salahi caused an embarrassing security flap at the White House when they finessed their way into a state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh without a formal invitation and were photographed shaking hands with President Barack Obama.
Danny Glover sees "WW2 destruction" in Haiti quake
PORT-AU-PRINCE - Hollywood actor Danny Glover on Friday compared the devastation inflicted on Haiti by the January 12 earthquake to the destruction of World War Two, but said the world was "paying attention" and ready to help. "Lethal Weapon" star Glover, a former United Nations goodwill ambassador, made the comments during a visit to the earthquake-hit Caribbean nation, in which he saw camps housing some of the hundreds of thousands of homeless survivors.
MGM creditors to discuss standalone plan
NEW YORK - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's steering committee will meet with creditors to present a stand-alone plan for the famed studio next week, sources familiar with the matter said. Creditors will present the plan in Los Angeles on Thursday after being disappointed with the bids it received, the sources said. The plan, which abandons the idea of a sale of the entire company, involves a mandate to make six to eight movies a year and requires large amounts of capital, the sources said.
Sick singer Tom Jones stops Singapore resort concert
SINGAPORE - Singer Tom Jones has postponed Singapore and Manila concerts due to laryngitis, his website said on Saturday, another blow to a new $4.4 billion resort and casino complex in Singapore. Jones began a concert at the newly opened Resorts World Sentosa in the city-state on Friday night but left the stage after two songs, the Straits Times newspaper reported. The casino and entertainment complex is operated by Genting Singapore, a unit of Malaysia's Genting Group.
"Idol" alum keeps his cool on long-awaited debut
NEW YORK - It's been two years since Jason Castro ambled onto "American Idol" -- ukulele, dreadlocks, stoner vibe and all. And while most of those voted off the show from seasons past have faded into obscurity or drifted into musical theater, Castro, who finished fourth, hasn't been easily forgotten. Nor has his personality changed, which became clear as soon as he was asked about his upcoming solo album.
Acting for top directors a joy, education for Matt Damon
LOS ANGELES - This month, at the ripe old age of 39, Matt Damon will receive the 24th American Cinematheque Award for his work in film -- and the timing couldn't be better: His action-thriller "Green Zone" opened March 12 and he has four other movies slated for this year: The Coen brothers' remake of "True Grit," the Philip K. Dick adaptation "The Adjustment Bureau," Clint Eastwood's unearthly "Hereafter" and Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion." And, as he told The Hollywood Reporter, he almost made "Avatar," too. THR: How do you expect working with the Coens on "True Grit" to compare with Clint Eastwood?
DVD series revisits British Invasion of '60s
LOS ANGELES packaged with a fifth disc of bonus material. The series originally was released last September in the United Kingdom.
