Letters from Napoleon's first wife Josephine to France's national hero fetched huge sums Saturday at an auction, including one that went for nearly 87,000 euros. FONTAINEBLEAU, France (AFP) - – Letters from Napoleon's first wife Josephine to France's national hero fetched huge sums Saturday at an auction, including one that went for nearly 87,000 euros. "This is a real triumph," auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat exulted after the auction of some 50 letters that Josephine wrote to her husband, along with 400 documents related to the French Revolution of 1789 and Napoleon's ensuing rule. "This is a confirmation that all the countries in the world are interested in Josephine," he said, adding that bidders had included "Americans, Britons, Germans, Russians and Swiss" individuals. The auction at Fontainebleau, south of Paris, fetched a higher-than-expected 700,000 euros (938,750 dollars), he said. Josephine's letter to her son about her former husband's abdication on April 6, 1814 following his defeat by coalition forces sold for 86,745 euros. It ran: "It's all over, he is abdicating. I'm in a daze and have horrible anxieties." It surpassed the bid for a famed 1796 love letter she had written that went: "My husband does not love me, he adores me, I believe he will go mad." Osenat said the "most magical and interesting" letter had been snatched at the highest price. "Why? Because it's history. An epic which shook the whole world for 15 years," he said. Born in 1763 in Martinique, Marie-Josephe-Rose de Tascher de la Pagerie, or Josephine, married Alexandre de Beauharnais with whom she had two children before they separated in 1785. She met Napoleon when he was a young officer and captivated him. He changed her name to Josephine and they married in 1796. Proclaimed empress in 1804, Josephine and Napoleon divorced due to her inability to give him an heir. He then wed Marie-Louise, archduchess of Austria. Josephine retired to her chateau at Malmaison outside Paris and died of pneumonia less than eight weeks after his abdication.
