2 boys playing with grenade killed in Philippines
AP - Monday, December 29
MANILA, Philippines - Police say two boys aged 9 and 13 have died after a grenade they were playing with exploded in the northern Philippines.
Police Superintendent Danilo Florentino says Ruben Gelido, the 9-year-boy's father and owner of the grenade, is under police custody. It was unclear where Gelido got the explosive.
Florentino says the elder boy was playing with the grenade on Sunday in front of the younger boy, his neighbor in Bulacan province, when it exploded, killing them instantly.
Gelido rushed his son to a hospital but the boy was declared dead on arrival.
Loose firearms and explosives are common in the Philippines despite a police crackdown on illicit weapons.
