Blasts kill nine Afghans, two Canadian soldiers
AFP - 1 hour 38 minutes ago
KHOST, Afghanistan (AFP) - - A suicide car bomb near an Afghan government office killed seven people Sunday, police said, as the Canadian military announced two of its soldiers and two Afghans died in another blast.
There were no claims of responsibility for the attacks, the latest in a wave of violence linked to a growing Taliban-led insurgency in Afghanistan, which is being fought by tens of thousands of foreign troops from about 40 countries.
The suicide attacker blew up a bomb-filled car that he was driving in the Ismail Khail district of the eastern province of Khost, near the border with Pakistan, police said.
"Seven people, including four children, were killed and another 30 children were wounded in the suicide attack," the district police chief, who uses only the name Jamal, told AFP.
A total of 36 people were admitted to the main public hospital for treatment, said the hospital director, Abdul Majeed Mangal.
The attacker detonated his charge as police opened fire to stop him from reaching the district government headquarters, where local leaders were meeting about security and presidential elections due next year, Jamal said.
"The bomber wanted to drive his way into the district compound when he was told to stop by police guards and was fired at when he refused to stop," Jamal said.
A policeman, an Afghan army soldier, a member of a pro-government militia and four students from a nearby school were killed, he said.
Most of the wounded were high school students who were checking their exam results, Jamal said, adding that some were also attending the meeting. High school students in Afghanistan are usually aged between 14 and 19.
District governor Dawlat Khan Qayomi, who had been hosting the meeting, blamed the attack on the Taliban.
The extremists, in power between 1996 and 2001, are waging a bloody insurgency against the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, which is backed by nearly 70,000 international soldiers under NATO and US command.
The Canadian military meanwhile announced that two of its soldiers were killed in a blast in southern Kandahar province on Saturday.
An Afghan policeman and an interpreter also died in the attack in Panjwayi district, a Taliban stronghold about 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Kandahar city, Canadian military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jay Janzen told AFP.
Four other Canadian soldiers and an interpreter were wounded in the attack against the soldiers, who were on foot patrol, he said.
More than 290 foreign soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan this year, most of them in bombings carried out by insurgents.
In 2007, just over 230 international troops were killed, according to the icasualties.org website that monitors the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Elsewhere, one person was killed and two wounded Sunday when a remote-controlled bomb exploded outside a music shop in southern Uruzgan province, police said.
A member of the Kandahar provincial council was meanwhile shot dead in a mosque late Saturday, an official said.
Mawlawi Abdul Qayom was also the imam (preacher) of the mosque, said the deputy head of the provincial religious council, Sra Jumat.
It was not clear who had carried out the attack, he said.
The US military reported meanwhile its troops had killed five militants and detained six in operations against extremist networks on Saturday.
