NZ diplomat says ejection from Fiji unwarranted
AP - 2 hours 12 minutes ago
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand's expelled acting High Commissioner to Fiji said her expulsion from the South Pacific island nation was unwarranted as she returned home Sunday.
Caroline McDonald was given a week to get out of Fiji by the country's military government on Tuesday for what it called undiplomatic behavior that included "engaging" with opposition groups and "not engaging" with the military-led government that staged a bloodless coup in December 2006.
New Zealand retaliated by ejecting Fiji's High Commissioner to New Zealand, Ponsami Chetty. Fiji dismissed New Zealand's High Commissioner Mike Green in June last year.
The Fiji government had taken "arbitrary and unwarranted action ... in expelling me from Fiji," McDonald told reporters.
The latest diplomatic spat escalates a rift between the two countries over Fiji military leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama's broken promise to restore democracy by April next year.
New Zealand, along with Australia, has headed international efforts to pressure Bainimarama to return the troubled nation to democratic rule.
Bainimarama has reneged on a vow to hold elections to restore democracy by the end of March 2009 _ a broken promise that has been condemned by many South Pacific states, the 53-member Commonwealth, the EU and the U.S.
Bainimarama has accused New Zealand and Australia of "employing bullyboy tactics" and frustrating his government's efforts to improve Fiji.
