Turnover was only 14.71 million shares, down from 22.47 million shares traded on Friday, and the lowest since December 2008. [.KA] * The net inflow of foreign portfolio investment in the stock market was $198,170 on Monday. * U.S. stocks were closed on Monday for the Independence Day holiday. [.N] * Oil extended losses on Tuesday to four-week lows near $71, down as much as 1.5 percent from Friday's close, after a raft of negative economic indicators over the past week undermined confidence about growth in energy use. U.S. crude for August delivery <CLc1> fell as much as $1.05 to $71.09 a barrel and was down 65 cents at $71.49 by 0233 GMT, in an extended session combining the trades of Monday and Tuesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange because of the Independence Day holiday. A single settlement price will be issued for July 6. [O/R] * Gold relinquished early gains on Tuesday as the U.S. dollar firmed against the euro and stock markets dropped on concerns about economic slowdowns in the U.S. and China, prompting speculators to sell bullion to cover losses. Gold <XAU=> fell $1.17 to $1,205.78 an ounce by 0248 GMT, having hit a high around $1,209. Gold slipped 3.4 percent last week, moving away from the record $1,264.90 hit in June, as risk aversion linked to fears over a debt crisis in Europe subsided.
