Fujitsu to let developers test software for free
TOKYO by the financial year starting next April.
Digital upstarts still see potential in downloads
NEW YORK - Much of the buzz around digital music is focused on Spotify's plans for the United States, Rdio's new subscription service, and what Apple's anticipated cloud-based music service will look like. But while streaming music services are capturing the most attention, two other entrants in the digital music market are betting there's still opportunity in selling digital downloads.
Lenovo says Apple losing out in China: report
HONG KONG - Apple <AAPL.O> is missing out on an opportunity to further expand in China, the Financial Times reported late on Sunday, citing Lenovo's <0992.HK> Chairman Liu Chuanzhi. "We are lucky Steve Jobs has such a bad temper and doesn't care about China," Liu was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
News Corp in talks to sell ads on MySpace: report
NEW YORK - News Corp <NWSA.O> is in talks with Google Inc <GOOG.O>, Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> and Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> about advertising on MySpace, as an existing contract with Google ends, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. Under a 2006 deal, Google had guaranteed $900 million to News Corp for the right to sell advertisements related to user searches on MySpace and some other small News Corp websites, the Journal reported.
At Sun Valley, brighter moods may not mean big deals
NEW YORK - As Rupert Murdoch, Bob Iger and other media honchos assemble in Sun Valley next week for some fly-fishing or white water rafting, spirits should be brighter than a year ago: stock prices are up by about a third, after all. That alone provides the currency and freedom to get down to the real business of the media summit, one that boutique investment bank Allen & Co annually hosts in the shadow of the Pioneer Mountains in Idaho. For the past 27 years, the Sun Valley Lodge has been the spot where blockbuster media deals have been hatched.
Obama announces broadband grants to spur jobs
WASHINGTON - U.S. President Barack Obama announced on Friday nearly $800 million in loans and grants for the build-out of broadband networks to reach homes, schools and hospitals. The grants and loans, which will be matched by another $200 million in private investment, is part of Obama's roughly $800 billion federal stimulus package, which includes $7.2 billion for broadband expansion projects.
Apple says iPhones overstate signal strength
NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> came clean on Friday about an embarrassing software glitch that overstates network signal strength in its hot-selling iPhone, as complaints mounted about the phone's wraparound antenna. Apple admitted its signal strength miscalculation dates back to its original 2007 iPhone. It promised to fix the glitch in a few weeks, but did not directly address concerns that its antenna design causes reception problems for iPhone 4, its newest phone.
Nokia aims to be the best with Symbian, MeeGo-Vanjoki
HELSINKI - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> is committed to get back the No.1 position in smartphones and plans to use no other software than Symbian and Linux MeeGo, head of its mobile solutions unit said on Friday. "It's my aim to ensure Nokia stays as the market and intellectual leader in creating the digital world," Anssi Vanjoki wrote in a blog on Nokia's website. "There is no denying, that as a challenger now, we have a fight on our hands. The first battle is to bring you products and services you will want to own and use."
Google to buy travel software co ITA for $700 million
SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON - Google Inc <GOOG.O> plans to buy one of the Web's key providers of airline travel software for $700 million, potentially raising new antitrust concerns for the world's largest Internet search engine. Google said on Thursday that it had agreed to buy privately-owned ITA Software, in a move that Google said would allow it to improve the way consumers find flight and fare information online.
Amazon again cuts Kindle price as iPad raises heat
NEW YORK - Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> cut the price on its most expensive Kindle electronic reader, the latest salvo in a price war in response to Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> pricier iPad tablet computer. It was the second price cut for the online retailer's line of e-book readers in as many weeks. Last week, Amazon cut the price of its cheaper Kindle with a 6-inch screen to $189, hours after bookstore chain Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> lowered the price of its "Nook" e-reader to $199. Both had cost $259.
