British Airways profits take a plunge
AFP - Saturday, November 8
LONDON, (AFP) - - British Airways announced a sharp fall in profits and passenger numbers Friday as it suffered the fallout from the global financial crisis and high fuel prices.
"This is a good performance given the incredibly difficult trading conditions. The six month period will be remembered as the bleakest on record," Chief Executive Willie Walsh, said in a statement.
The company recorded a net loss of 42 million pounds (53 million euros, 66 million dollars) for the first half of 2008 and said passenger numbers were down by almost four percent.
Pre-tax profits were down to 52 million pounds from 616 million pounds a year earlier.
