DRCongo peace summit opens in Nairobi
AFP - Saturday, November 8
NAIROBI, (AFP) - - An international emergency summit aimed at ending fighting in the conflict-torn eastern Democratic Republic of Congo kicked off Friday in Nairobi.
Proceedings started at a hotel on the outskirts of Nairobi with several bilateral meetings. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was expected to address a session later in the day.
The summit was hastily convened earlier this week as fighting pitting the Congolese army and its proxies against rebels led by renegade general Laurent Nkunda killed dozens and displaced tens of thousands.
One of the main goals will be to rekindle dialogue between Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his Congolese counterpart Joseph Kabila. They are both attending the summit but it was unclear if they would talk directly.
Their two governments signed an agreement almost a year ago to the day in Nairobi committing to a number of measures aimed at stabilising the eastern DRC but the deal has since remained a dead letter.
Besides the UN chief, summit participants also included his new envoy to Congo, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, and several African heads of state.
