ShareThis May 7, 2010 6:49 a.m. EST Topics: healthcare policy, disease, health, United States David Goodhue - AHN News Reporter Washington, D.C., DC, United States (AHN) - The American Cancer Center is slamming a report by a governmental panel that the nonprofit claims grossly over links cancer with pollution and other environmental factors. The report, from the President’s Cancer Panel, states the risk of cancer from things like car and truck exhaust, pesticides, industrial chemicals and even X-rays, has not been given enough attention. The report starts with a letter urging more regulation in these areas from the White House. But Dr. Michael J. Thun, vice president emeritus at the cancer society, said in an online statement that “the perspective of the report is unbalanced by its implication that pollution is the major cause of cancer, and by its dismissal of cancer prevention efforts aimed at the major known causes of cancer (tobacco, obesity, alcohol, infections, hormones, sunlight) as ‘focussed narrowly,’” Thun went on to call the report “provocative” in claiming a scientific consensus exists that cancer risk from pollution has been grossly underestimated. Thun said a significant amount of cancer cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes, including quitting smoking and exercising more. The report, he said, gives the idea that much of cancer prevention is out of an individual’s control.
