French honour for folk singer Donovan, countertenor Jaroussky
AFP - Monday, January 19
CANNES (AFP) - - Scottish folk legend Donovan and French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky were honoured with French artistic awards Sunday for their contribution to French culture.
The singers received the award from France's Culture Minister Christine Albanel on the first day of the annual Midem music industry conference in Cannes.
Albanel called Donovan, who was made an Officer of the French Order of Arts and Literature, "a living pop-folk legend, a genuine poet and true humanist."
She also described Jaroussky, who was awarded the more common Knight of the French Order of Arts and Literature prize, as a "prodigy" of French opera and praised "the extraordinary purity" of his voice.
Donovan, 62, rose to fame in the 1960s with hits such as "Mellow Yellow", "Sunshine Superman" and "Jennifer Juniper". Most recently he collaborated with French group Variety Lab on their up-coming single.
Jaroussky, famed for his soprano countertenor voice, is at the vanguard of modern French opera.
Established in 1957, the French Order of Arts and Literature has three grades in order of merit: commander, officer and knight. Other recipients of the award include Bob Dylan, Salman Rushdie and Kylie Minogue.
