Yachting: Volvo Ocean Race boats leave Singapore for China
Channel NewsAsia - Monday, January 19
SINGAPORE: After a two—week stopover in Singapore, the Volvo Ocean Race boats left the island on Sunday.
They are headed for China as part of the fourth leg of the 37,000—nautical mile round the world yacht race.
And the latest leg will be the toughest to date.
Channel NewsAsia was at a sending—off ceremony for the participants at Sentosa on Sunday.
It was a solemn start as prayers by various religious groups were conducted for the departing fleet.
There were also a few words of farewell from Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.
Then it was the turn of families and friends to say good bye to the sailors who will be severely tested in the next leg.
Ken Read, Puma Ocean Racing, said as skipper of the boat, safety would be the main objective as he expects the China—leg race to be rough.
The boats headed out to the waters off the East Coast where a ceremonial spray helped to cool temperatures in the hot afternoon.
Participants can expect extreme cold conditions, with sub—zero temperatures when they head to China.
Travelling against the wind will pose another challenge to both sailors and vessels, and that is why all the boats are putting safety above winning the next leg.
It was time for one last short race before the boats took off for the 2,500—nautical mile journey to China.
They are expected to arrive in China by the end of January where another in—port race awaits them. — CNA/de
