Hindsight: Can we get Fey to change water cooler?

By DAVID BAUDER,AP Television Writer AP - Saturday, May 2
NEW YORK - An absurdist show where laugh lines frequently detonate after they've flown past isn't necessarily where you'd expect a loving tribute to the art of physical comedy.

Yet in the most priceless moment of NBC's "30 Rock" on Thursday, Tina Fey channeled the spirit of Lucille Ball. (For those of you under 50, go to YouTube and search "I Love Lucy" and winery. You won't regret it.)
Fey's Liz Lemon is involved in a test of wills with Tracy Morgan's pampered Tracy Jordan character, where they both agree to treat each other equally. Jordan asks Lemon for a drink, yet the water cooler bottle is empty and needs to be replaced. Jordan insists Lemon change the bottle herself.
What ensues is a fumbling piece of masterful comedy. Lemon finally succeeds, but only after most of the water ends up on the floor or on her clothes. It's funnier because most office workers can relate: How DO you get that bottle changed without splashing water on yourself or the surrounding environs?
How did she get there? Lemon is finally so exasperated by Jordan's tardiness for rehearsals that she scolds him in front of the cast and crew. Jordan plays the race card. Literally. He hands Lemon a yellow card emblazoned "race card."
"It costs the show a lot of money when you pull these shenanigans," Lemon scolds him.
"Don't patronize me with your Celtic slang," Jordan replies. "We have a black president now."
Says Lemon: "What do you care? You voted for Nader."
They eventually decide true equality is too hard to handle when Lemon joins the guys at a strip club, after she tells Jordan he can't go because he has to stay back and work.
Jane Krakowski may have a bone to pick with the show's writers. Her character wastes the episode in an embarrassing plotline that has her overly friendly with a gibbon.
The state of Florida took a few hits, too. Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy character says it's "basically a criminal population. It's America's Australia." Donaghy's mom, shocking her son with a male companion, says of the state: "It's like it never stopped being the '70s down there. A guy like (the companion), who can drive at night, you just don't say no to him."
Donaghy's preoccupied with the 35th anniversary of when his dad walked out on his mom for good, a date she can't even recall.
"30 Rock" ended the episode abruptly with its version of a cliffhanger. Donaghy figures out, after his mother described one of his absences, that the man he considered his father actually wasn't him.
"Twist!" Lemon said.
Twisted out of proportion, really. This isn't a formula that suits this particular comedy well.
