Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Saudis brace for BlackBerry ban, new models in UAE AFP - Friday, August 6 Send IM Story Print Saudis brace for BlackBerry ban, new models in UAE JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AFP) - – Smartphone users in Saudi Arabia were bracing Thursday for a suspension of BlackBerry services but many other Saudis welcomed the ban, saying the devices are corrupting the kingdom's youth. The conservative and highly security-conscious Arab state said it would from Friday block the messenger, web browsing and email services of BlackBerry because the manufacturers had failed to meet its demands. Meanwhile the United Arab Emirates, which became the first country in the region to announce the suspension of BlackBerry services, will also be first to receive the latest model of the device, The National newspaper said Thursday. Saudi's Arab News paper, in a report on its website, said an online survey of 331 people found 178 people opposed to the Saudi ban and 153 supporting it. Those who disagreed, the report said, complained that no prior notice was given, with some having purchased their BlackBerries just days ago and are now lumbered with an expensive device that will not work as a smartphone. Nevertheless, 153 people of those in the poll, apparently conducted by the newspaper, said they support the move as BlackBerries "have had a very negative effect on the youth." Most of those supporting the ban were parents who had been arguing with their children on the issue, Arab News said. A woman, named as Um Aisha, told the paper that she had confiscated her daughters BlackBerry after she became overly attached to it to the point it was affecting her health. "My daughter collapsed once. When we took her to hospital the doctor said she was suffering from fatigue ... She reads every SMS she receives and even replies to them late at night," Um Aisha said. A university student, May, also supported the ban. "Now I can enjoy my time with my friends just like the old days," it quoted her as saying. Saudi Arabia's Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) announced on Tuesday that it has ordered the kingdom's three mobile phone providers to block BlackBerry services for failing to conform with regulations. If they fail to comply with CITC order, the companies will face a fine of 1.3 million dollars, one company official told AFP on Wednesday. "We will also comply for security reasons." With a ban announced last Sunday, ahead of the Saudis, the normally high-tech savvy UAE has said its suspension of BlackBerry services will come into effect on October 11. But a spokeswoman for makers Research In Motion (RIM), quoted in Abu Dhabi's The National, said the Torch version of the phone, due for release next week in the United States, will be available in the UAE from October. "Its business as usual for us," the newspaper quoted her as saying. The UAE said it is to block the key BlackBerry services -- messenger, web browsing and email -- because they "allow individuals to commit violations" that the country can not monitor. Its Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said on Wednesday that the decision was final. However, "we remain open to discussions in order that an acceptable, regulatory-compliant solution might be developed and applied," TRA director-general Mohammed al-Ghanem said. In a play to compete with Apple's hot-selling iPhone which is loaded with multimedia functions, the Torch model of the BlackBerry combines touch screen, a new keyboard, a locations service and applications. RIM says users will also be able "to communicate any way they want." While the iPhone's popularity has soared because of its games, social networking, video watching and applications, BlackBerry has until now remained a favourite for business people craving secure wireless communications. India is another country mulling restrictions due to fears that BlackBerry's encrypted services, which involve data being routed through secure servers in Canada, could be used by militants or others for criminal activities. But RIM founder and co-chief executive Mike Lazaridis has told The New York Times that allowing governments to monitor messages would imperil the firm's ties with customers, including major corporations and law enforcement agencies.
