Phelps opened his five event campaign on the second day of the championships with a hard-fought victory in the 200m freestyle. Phelps held off Ryan Lochte's last-lap challenge to win in 1:45.61, with Lochte second in 1:45.78 - the two fastest times in the world this year. "It was brutal" Lochte said of the finish. "Still a little slower than I want to be, but it's all right," said Phelps, who is battling through an inconsistent season after taking considerable time off from training. But his suspect fitness showed when he returned less than an hour later for the 200 fly. "Terrible" was Phelps' verdict after a victory in 1:56.00 - 4.49 seconds outside the world record he set at the World Championships in Rome last July. "I'm not in the best of shape to do two races back-to-back like that," said Phelps, the man who piled up impressive performances in his eight-gold campaign at the Beijing Olympics. "My stroke didn't feel good, I chopped two walls... that's probably the worst 200 fly I've ever swum in my life." No one could take advantage. Phelps led the whole way with Mark Dylla finishing second in 1:57.08 and Tyler Clary third in 1:57.32. "That 200 free was a really good race," Phelps' coach Bob Bowman said, as for the fly: "He gutted that out." While Phelps was somewhat disappointed in victory, Peirsol was philosophical in defeat, even though he hadn't lost the 100m backstroke at a national championships since finishing fourth in 2000. Unheralded David Plummer beat the two-time Olympic gold medallist in the event at the wall, clocking 53.60sec. Peirsol was second in 53.63 and Nick Thoman, who had led at the turn ahead of Peirsol and Plummer, was third. Matt Grevers, the 2008 Olympic silver medallist, was fourth. "It means everything," an emotional Plummer said. "To walk away with the gold medal against a field like that makes me think I can be the best in the world one day. That's every swimmer's dream." "I was happy for Dave," Peirsol said. "He has been swimming a long time. I know he's been training exceptionally well this year." The closeness of the finish made it easier to take, Peirsol said. "Races like that can go either way," he said. "I'm not sure that fazes me, considering how close it was." Natalie Coughlin won the women's 100m backstroke to book a spot on her first national team in two years. Coughlin is a two-time Olympic gold medallist in the event, but this meet, which determines the US team for the Pan Pacific Championships that start here on August 18, marks her first major competition since the Beijing Games in 2008. Her winning time of 1:00.14 was well outside her American record of 58.94, but Coughlin didn't care. "It's very strange to be back at another selection meet," said Coughlin, who finished fourth in the 100m butterfly on Tuesday. "Yesterday I felt very out of it. It's good to be back on another national team." Qualifying for the Pan Pacs also puts Coughlin in position to make the US team for next year's World Championships, which will be decided based on times posted in the two competitions. Olympian Allison Schmitt won the women's 200m freestle in 1:56.84. Dana Vollmer was second in 1:56.93 with Katie Hoff third in 1:57.50.
