China FM urges withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza
AFP - 2 hours 25 minutes ago
KLEINMOND, South Africa (AFP) - - Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi called Friday for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the battle-torn Palestinian territory.
"We are deeply concerned about what is going on in the Gaza Strip," Yang told reporters after a meeting with his South African counterpart Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma outside of Cape Town.
"There should be an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza area."
"We believe that the international community should exert its efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis there. We believe that the goal should be... Israel and Palestine living together in peaceful co-existence."
"The current situation is totally unacceptable," he said.
His comments came as the largest Israeli offensive ever launched on Gaza entered its fourth week, with over 1,100 Palestinians killed since the operation, aimed at halting rocket fire, was launched on December 27.
Jiechi spoke at the end of a four-nation tour of Africa in which he sought to further strengthen political and economic ties with the continent.
Before arriving in South Africa, Yang visited Uganda, Rwanda and Malawi.
