BCA plans to train 9,000 people to meet industry demand
Channel NewsAsia - 1 hour 31 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: The annual construction demand is projected to reach S$22 billion to S$28 billion this year and around S$20 billion to S$27 billion in 2010—2011.
Even though the figures are lower than last year’s, the government said the industry still lacks manpower and plans to offer more training courses to meet demand.
The value of construction contracts awarded in 2008 hit a record S$34.6 billion. This means there is plenty of work in the industry over the next two years.
The National Development Ministry said while construction demand will slow, the level of demand will still be much higher than the average of S$13 billion from 1998 to 2006.
In a move to help small and medium—sized builders, the government will be bringing forward projects worth up to S$50 million each.
Grace Fu, senior minister of state for National Development and Education, said: "The good news for job seekers is that the industry is still hiring. In the Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) recent survey of about 1,500 firms, mainly contracting firms, half of them indicated that they were short of manpower."
More than 380 jobs are being advertised at the BCA Career Fair and some 600 vacancies have been posted on its website.
One area which the government is interested in developing is the green building sector. It targets to train at least 8,000 specialists in areas like sustainable building design and energy management over the next five years.
The BCA Academy is also tying up with universities from the US and UK to educate "green—collared" workers.
Besides professionals, about 1,000 training places will be offered at the tradesmen level in areas like electrical works and crane operation.
All courses will be subsidised under the Skills Programme for Upgrading And Resilience (SPUR).
