Boy George sentenced to 15 months in jail
LONDON - Former Culture Club frontman Boy George was sentenced on Friday to 15 months in jail after being found guilty last month of falsely imprisoning a Norwegian male escort. Tried under his real name George O'Dowd, the 47-year-old Briton denied the charge of false imprisonment at his London flat in April, 2007. After his conviction on December 5, judge David Radford had warned him that he faced a prison term.
Sundance opens with hope for indie film
PARK CITY, Utah - The 25th Sundance Film Festival opened on Thursday with founder Robert Redford sounding an optimistic note for cinematic art and an artful movie challenging audiences to laugh through the pain of an imperfect world. The Australian animated film "Mary and Max," a tale of misfits on opposite sides of the globe who find friendship by becoming pen pals, was described by festival director Geoffrey Gilmore as being about "compassion, love, friendship and ideas."
Christie Brinkley's "Got Milk," has hope for Obama
PARK CITY, Utah - Christie Brinkley ended 2008 with an ugly public divorce from her unfaithful fourth husband, but the former supermodel says she is full of optimism for 2009, sparked by U.S. President-elect Barack Obama. Brinkley, who was at the Sundance Film Festival to launch her third "got milk?" advertising campaign, said she would be glued to the television on Tuesday to watch Obama be sworn in as the first black U.S. president.
Slamdance festival marks 15th year beside Sundance
PARK CITY, Utah - Born out of rejections from the Sundance Film Festival, one-time rival Slamdance marked 15 years of competition when it opened late on Thursday, having garnered respect by launching the careers of noted directors Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster and others. For years Slamdance, which runs alongside Robert Redford's 25-year-old Sundance, fought for attention in the independent film world, but movies like "Mad Hot Ballroom" helped put it on Hollywood's map.
ABC feeling economic, digital pressures
LOS ANGELES - Even with hit shows such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy," ABC is tightening its belt as it weathers the U.S. economic downturn and tries to remain relevant in an industry challenged by digital entertainment. We are looking at everything we can possibly do to be more efficient and more effective," ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson told reporters on Friday.

NBC renews "Office" and "30 Rock"
LOS ANGELES - NBC announced early renewals for a trio of returning shows while providing reassurance that weakened powerhouse "Heroes" has a "very secure" future. Hollywood actors union backs off strike threat
LOS ANGELES - The Screen Actors Guild president said on Thursday he now wanted his sharply divided union to vote on the Hollywood studios' latest contract offer, not a strike authorization, in hopes of breaking a months-old deadlock in labor talks. Embracing a reversal of strategy proposed by his embattled executive director, SAG President Allen Rosenberg said he would also press the studios once more to sweeten their offer before submitting it to rank-and-file members for ratification.
Booker T. rocks with Truckers, Neil Young
SAVANNAH, Georgia - Booker T. Jones' resume on the renowned Stax/Volt soul labels reads like a field guide to American music. But for his first solo set since the '80s, the 64-year-old musician went with a different kind of Southern sound, enlisting Georgia rockers the Drive-By Truckers as his backing band for an album of all-new instrumentals. "Potato Hole," due April 21, marks Jones' debut on independent label Anti-. Neil Young, who Booker T. and the MGs backed on 2002's "Are You Passionate?," handles lead guitar duties, and the 10-song set includes covers of "Hey Ya," Tom Waits' "Get Behind the Mule" and the Drive-By Truckers' "Space City."
