Cocoa, FL (AHN) - The search for a 3-year-old boy abducted by his father is over. The boy was taken during a court-supervised visit three days ago. He was safely recovered early today from a sailboat in the Gulf of Mexico.
Luke Finch is being brought to Fort Myers on the Coast Guard Cutter Crocodile. The boat is expected to arrive this evening. He was recovered this morning around sunrise by two Coast Guard Cutters and a helicopter. He was unharmed. His father, 35-year-old Paul Martikainen, is still aboard the sailboat. He is being towed to shore by Coast Guard Cutter Kodiak Island. He will arrive much later than Finch. Martikainen will then be placed into custody on a federal arrest warrant. A spokesperson for Cocoa police said the department is happy with the outcome of events, and that Finch was returned safely.
According to Brevard County court records, Paul Martikainen and Christa Finch married in December 2004. She filed for divorce in July 2005. At that time, she was pregnant with Luke. Martikainen gave up rights to the unborn child. In September 2006, Finch moved back in with him. She moved out in January 2008. Martikainen filed for joint custody of the child, saying he helped raise him and developed a bond with him.
