MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A major figure in Mexican President Felipe Calderon's political party was feared kidnapped on Saturday after his abandoned car was found with signs of violence, the attorney general's office said.
World
Diego Fernandez de Cevallos, 69, the 1994 presidential candidate for Calderon's conservative National Action Party, or PAN, has been missing since Friday, local media reported.
His car was discovered near his ranch in the central state of Queretaro with some of his personal belongings, a statement from the attorney general's office said.
Some local media outlets reported that Fernandez de Cevallos, who has served as an influential legislator, had been found dead but federal authorities said they could not confirm his death.
Kidnapping is rife in Mexico, which is in the grip of a deadly fight against drug traffickers and organized crime gangs whose violence has left 23,000 dead during Calderon's term in office.
Officials did not say if drug gangs were involved in Fernandez de Cevallos disappearance.
A handful of local politicians, gearing up for elections in several states, have been killed in recent weeks.
