Windsor Genova - AHN News News Writer
Burlington, VT, United States (AHN) - Victims of child molestation at the hands of Roman Catholic priests decided to settle 28 lawsuits against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington for $20 million on Thursday so they could move on with their lives.
Catholic Bishop Salvatore Matano announced the settlement of the cases that include 23 allegations of molestation of altar boys in the 70s and 80s by Reverent Edward Paquette.
Matano also apologized to the victims.
There are also two cases awarding damages to victims but are on appeal before the Vermont Supreme Court.
The diocese is selling its headquarters in Burlington, Camp Holy Cross in Colchester and will use the church's reserves to pay the settlement, according to the bishop.
