Google says mistakenly got wireless data

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> said its fleet of cars responsible for photographing streets around the world have for several years accidentally collected personal information -- which a security expert said could include email messages and passwords -- sent by consumers over wireless networks. The company said on Friday that it is currently reaching out to regulators in the relevant countries, which include the United States, Germany, France, Brazil and Hong Kong in China, about how to dispose of the data, which Google said it never used.

Beer, betrayal, a lost iPhone in Apple device tale

SAN FRANCISCO - Fearing "huge" losses in sales after pictures leaked of its fourth-generation iPhone, Apple Inc <AAPL.O> convinced police to launch a felony investigation and Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs contacted the offending Web site himself to try and recover the gadget. A California court unsealed a search warrant on Friday in the case of the lost or stolen prototype 4G iPhone whose inner workings ended up on popular gadget site Gizmodo -- weaving a bizarre tale of beer gardens, paranoid lawyers and emails to the Apple chieftain.

Google to stop selling smartphone online

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc is closing its 4-month-old online cell phone store, abandoning an ambitious plan by the Web search leader to redefine wireless retailing. Google said on Friday it will stop selling its Nexus One smartphone through its online Web store and will instead work with partners to sell the device through retail outlets.

Ruling could have chilling effect on P2P services

LOS ANGELES/DENVER file sharing. But its practical importance in squelching illegal downloading is much murkier. New York-based LimeWire claims to be "the world's most popular peer-to-peer file sharing program," and, if the major labels succeed in obtaining an injunction to disable the service, millions of users will see their spigot of free songs suddenly shut off.

Gameworld: Free games lure new players including women, elderly

RALEIGH, North Carolina - The video game industry has weathered the economic slowdown better than most industries, but there could be a reason -- free games with new figures showing up to a third of gamers don't pay to play. More people are getting into gaming through free titles like Zynga's "Treasure Isle" played online through social networking sites like Facebook, downloading free games like ngmoco's "Godfinger" on mobile devices like iPhone and iPad, or sitting on a friend's couch to play multiplayer maps with titles like Activision Blizzard's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2."

Video game sales plunge in April: NPD

SAN FRANCISCO - Sales of video game hardware and software plunged 26 percent in April, industry tracker NPD said on Thursday, one of the largest declines over the past decade. The research group said sales in the United States, the world's largest market, fell to $766.2 million.

Libya crash boy's family blog becomes a memorial

AMSTERDAM - The family travel blog of the sole survivor of a Libyan plane crash that killed 103 people has turned into a condolence register, with dozens offering sympathy to the nine-year-old Dutch boy orphaned by the crash. Ruben van Assouw lost both his parents and his brother in Wednesday's disaster and the blog run by his father Patrick at http://onsgaanopvakansie.blogspot.com has been inundated with messages following the crash.

Google proposes remedies in Italy antitrust case

ROME - Google <GOOG.O> has proposed remedies to close an Italian antitrust probe into whether the Internet search giant coerced local newspapers into posting stories on its news website, the watchdog said on Friday. The regulator began the probe in August 2009 after the Italian Federation of Newspaper Editors alleged that any publication refusing to appear on the Google News Italia website was excluded from Google's search engine.

TiVo win set aside by appeals court; shares drop

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK - Shares of TiVo fell as much as 42 percent on Friday after an appeals court set aside the company's win in a patent battle over digital video recorders with rivals Dish <DISH.O> and EchoStar <SATS.O>. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said the entire court would reconsider its own March 4 decision made by three judges. The larger panel would likely be about 10 judges.

Global ad industry eyes boost from mobile devices

MOSCOW - The global advertising industry is eager to capitalize on booming use of mobile phones for Internet access as more enhanced devices are coming to the market to get more consumers reachable online. The trend is promising bumper returns in future years especially in markets like Russia where Internet usage is growing rapidly and is forecast to do so for years to come as people's incomes find support from oil-based economic growth.
