Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Singapore Asia Pacific World Pakistani stocks end up; rupee flat; o/n rates down Reuters - Tuesday, June 22 Send IM Story Print KARACHI, June 21 - Pakistani stocks ended marginally higher on light trading on Monday because of investors' uncertainty over a capital gains tax on the stock market due to be imposed July 1, dealers said. The KSE benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> rose 0.18 percent, or 16.91 points, to end at 9,662.62. Volume was 66.95 million shares, compared with 134.42 million shares traded on Friday. In its budget for the 2010/11 fiscal year, the government announced that a capital gains tax of 10 percent would be imposed on stocks held for six months or less and 7.5 percent on stocks held between 6 months to a year. Dealers said the government had previously agreed with the exchange that the capital gains tax would be levied only on profits made from the start of the 2010/11 fiscal year on July 1. But now there are concerns the government may seek to tax gains made before that date and demand quarterly tax returns instead of the annual filing preferred by brokers, they said. "Capital gains tax related matters remained at the heart of the dull session witnessed today as investors are still confused about its modalities as the year end approaches," said Furqan Punjani, an analyst at Topline Securities Ltd. The exchange and the government are in talks over implementation of the tax. In the currency market, the rupee <PKR=> ended flat at 85.45/50 to the dollar, compared with 85.45/52 on Friday, and dealers said they expected the local unit to stay around the current levels for now as there was ample supply at 85.50. In the money market, overnight rates fell to 11.15 percent, compared with Friday's close of 12.40 percent. There were no inflows or outflows on Monday and dealers said the next scheduled inflow is on July 1 of 7.6 billion rupees. However that inflow would come in on July 2 as July 1 is a bank holiday.
