ShareThis June 21, 2010 10:20 a.m. EST Topics: lifestyle and leisure, disaster and accident, environmental issue, natural resources, fire, outdoors, forests, United States Kris Alingod - AHN News Contributor Flagstaff, AZ, United States (AHN) - Three wildfires kept Arizona authorities busy over the weekend, including one that began Sunday morning in the Coconino National Forest and has grown to 5,000 acres. The U.S. Forest Service said the communities of Fernwood, Timberline and Wupatki have been evacuated because of the massive blaze, called the Shultz Fire. No injuries have been reported and no neighborhoods are experiencing loss of power, according to the Coconino County sheriff's office. About 300 firefighters, eight air tankers and five helicopters are working to contain the wildfire, which began before noon on Sunday in the area of Schultz Pass, east of Flagstaff and southeast of the San Francisco Peaks. The cause of the blaze is still unknown, and it is spreading at "very high rates" because of fuels such as ponderosa pine, conifers and pinyon-juniper, the Forest Service said in an update. The Arizona Department of Transportation has closed Highway 89 northbound at Silver Saddle and southbound about 2.5 miles north of Sunset Crater Road junction. The Red Cross has opened a shelter at Mt. Elden Middle School in Flagstaff, where motorists who choose not to take detour routes may also stay. Officials are advising residents who have not left their homes to stay indoors to prevent smoke inhalation. Animals from Second Chance Center have been relocated to Fort Tuthill County Park. Meanwhile, all evacuations because of a smaller blaze southwest of Herold Ranch Road and Little America, also in Flagstaff, have been lifted. The Hardy Fire has been reduced to 300 acres after crews successfully contained 30 percent of it. The blaze began Saturday afternoon and grew quickly because of winds gusting at 30 miles per hour, forcing the evacuation of homes around Herold Ranch Road and in Sinagua Heights, as well as the Coconino Humane Society Shelter. A California man, Randall Wayne Nicholson, has been arrested in connection with the Hardy Fire. Nicholson, 54, is believed to have constructed a small campfire before the blaze began, the Coconino County sheriff's office said in a release. An earlier fire that began Friday in Kaibab National Forest west of Flagstaff is also still burning. The Eagle Rock Fire, as it is called, is down to 3,420 acres and is 60 percent contained. Evacuated residents in the area were allowed to return to their homes on Sunday, but more than 600 people are still battling the blaze. Officials are still investigating how the wildfire began but say lightning is the likely cause. The blaze is expected to be fully contained Wednesday "due to the number of resources released to the Schultz Fire," the Forest Service said. The team assigned to the Eagle Rock Fire has sent 170 firefighters to help with the blaze in Schultz.
